Hi all,
I am in a dilemma. After the announcement today that google has started offering unlocked galaxy nexus on the play store for $399 I was thinking whether I should return the sprint galaxy nexus and go in for the unlocked galaxy nexus straight from google. I might
A. save some money on the plan cost if I go with say T Mobile
B. not have to worry about contract charges when the new nexus phone is released in 6-8 months and I want to get it.
C. Also will have the phone straight from google so I believe the updates should be the fastest.

I wanted your honest opinion. Please guide.

Re: Any one returning their sprint g nexus for the unlocked g ne

Im really considering getting one and going with t mobile also.

I finally pulled the trigger and ordered the unlocked galaxy nexus. I will be returning the sprint galaxy nexus... the numbers just did not add up justifying not moving to monthly 4G on t-mobile with the unlocked galaxy nexus. I am putting the link of the plan costs:

http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/

Please do weigh in whether you feel the decision has been wrong or right..

Re: Any one returning their sprint g nexus for the unlocked g ne

It has been at this price a few times from various (good) sellers, and it is indeed a better deal, but I decided to stay with Sprint anyways.

The fact that it is available for this price *again* isn't anything new (for me), so it doesn't change my opinion.

If you have good T-Mobile service go for it. I was going to leave Sprint, pay the ETF and pay the going rate for a unlocked version. Before I made the leap I decided to test Tmos service and buy a beat up used HTC amaze on Craigslist and buy a pre paid sim to test out Tmo's service in my area. I found out to my dismay that Tmo was horrible in my area. When I was in Los Angeles it was great but when I would get back to my town at the end of the day I could rarely get service. I already know AT&T is the same way because my in laws can never get a signal when they visit. So it came down to Verizon or stay with Sprint. I have a friend who is a sprint employee handling corporate accounts and he assured me they plan on lighting up my town with LTE around Christmas so I decided to give Sprint one last chance.

Tmo is nice and all and I was really considering picking this up but when I was in Waco, Tx the other day and I got LTE there, this phone was blazzing fast way faster than anything Tmo can get up to.

Re: Any one returning their sprint g nexus for the unlocked g ne

and now that sprint has the gnexus for free and sprint is the only carrier to allow unlimited data without lowering your speed after you have browsed the entire internet. hard choice, tmobile is half the price monthly well less $30 versus sprint $70 pay for the phone upfront or pay for it in the monthly fee?
i went with sprint as i would use more minutes then the base tmobile unlimited data plan gives making the monthly savings less and as much as i may not hit the data cap of 5g every month on the months i do it would suck to be throttled down. also i have wimax available here, if i didnt the data cap wouldnt have been an issue and tmobile prepay would be an easy choice.
without wimax or 4g having unlimited data is a bit of a waste with wifi being almost everywhere.

i'm toying with the idea of buying my next Nexus direct from Google. then just use T-Mobile unlimited everything pre-paid via SIM card. immediate updates, no contract, total freedom. but that kind of scares me.

i'm afraid of T-Mobile customer service, coverage, call quality, data speed, online billing/web capabilities etc.

TMOs CS is 2nd to none. After a year with them there just about nothing you can't get for free. I was with them for almost 6 years and I would get a new phone at discount every year, until I got the Nexus S. And the only reason I didn't upgrade after a year is because I lived the Nexus S.

Re: Any one returning their sprint g nexus for the unlocked g ne

If I didn't have a SERO plan (with discounts) on Sprint, I would have switched over to T-mo's plan (assuming their coverage met my needs). The $349 for unlocked Nexus (real Nexus - with timely updates) from the play store is a great price!

In my opinion, T-mo's prepaid customer service is not as good as Sprint's postpaid customer service (I have a prepaid line with T-mo - not the monthly prepaid - just pay-as-you-go), and their customer service is bad.

why do you say this? specific examples?

Re: Any one returning their sprint g nexus for the unlocked g ne

why do you say this? specific examples?

Sure (note that these are issues that "I" ran into - each customer service rep may be different, so your experience may vary).
I don't mean to turn this into "bad T-mo" / "bad Sprint" discussion, but am only providing a few examples for reference (as asked)

  1. I purchased a Nokia Nuron from T-mo for use on my prepaid line (paid full price of course). Had an international trip coming up (which is where I use this line primarily - since my Sprint phone is only CDMA). Ensured that I had met T-mo's requirements (minimum 60 days and account balance of at least $10).
    • Called T-mo prepaid dept - and first rep says "we do not unlock prepaid phones". I pointed her to their support website where they clearly state that they do, and she responded with "we can't access public facing website. Our policy in this center is that we won't unlock"
    • Started a chat session - rep tells me "sure, we can unlock it - but you need to refill your account in the past 30 days - I point rep to their website that states that you need prepaid balance of at least $10 *OR* a refill in past 30 days. My balance is over $100, so it shouldn't be a problem. Rep says - that may be inaccurate. Please refill with at least $10 and contact us again.
    • Added $10 - started chat session again - rep says - oh, you didn't need to refill since you already exceeded $10 minimum requirement - sent me unlock code by Email two weeks and three status update request Emails later (I was told to expect it the same day)
  2. Their website (as of last month) doesn't provide a way to check your prepaid balance expiration date. Unlike monthly prepaid plan, the pay-as-you-go plan requires a refill every few months (6 months I think) - and that month counter resets when you refill. I refill $200 or so and lose track of when I refilled. So, it requires a chat session or a call to find the balance expiration date. Website could be enhanced (there are other small issues too).
  3. Bought a prepaid smartphone. It had issues after a couple of months. Got tossed between T-mo store and online support and retailer repeatedly because nobody seemed to want to fix the issue with a "prepaid" phone.

I have no experience with their monthly plan customer service, or their postpaid customer service. Sprint customer service sucked till about 5 years ago (I've been with them for about 12 years now) - in the past 5 years, I've had zero complains with their customer service. Zero. (their coverage sucks, their phone OS update process sucks, but their customer service is pretty good - my opinion only of course - I'm sure there will be many sprint customers who have horrible experiences with Sprint CSRs)

Hope this helps answer your question? :)

Re: Any one returning their sprint g nexus for the unlocked g ne

1. i would be looking at the T-Mobile pre paid MONTHLY plan. how does that work? do i just give them my credit card and they bang it for ~$50 every month and i can forget about it?

2. how is T-Mobile's voice and data COVERAGE area and data speeds? as good as or better than Sprint?

I don't know about your first question - I'd assume they will be happy to auto-bill you every month, but I don't know.

T-mo's prepaid coverage map is available at http ://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-coverage
T-mo's Postpaid coverage map: http ://www.t-mobile.com/coverage/pcc.aspx

Sprint's coverage map is available at http ://www.sprint.com/coverage

Sprint's coverage map appears to be much better - but what matters is coverage where you need it. So, enter your street address and check coverage. Also, check coverage with an actual device (ask a neighbor to confirm coverage).

Sprint's site indicates that I should have LTE coverage at my residence - it doesn't - not unless I travel about 3-4 miles away. T-mo's site indicates that I should have 3g coverage at my residence - it doesn't - not unless I travel about 8 miles away.

Edit: please remove the space after "http" in the links above - URL formatting was getting messed up in the post.

Re: Any one returning their sprint g nexus for the unlocked g ne

T-Mob doesn't even have 3G at your residence??????? WTF???

Remember - T-mo's postpaid coverage maps are different than prepaid coverage maps (see my earlier post)

But to answer your question, yes T-mo's coverage does not actually give me 3g coverage at my residence in Dallas, TX (even though their coverage maps indicate that I should have coverage)

I thought it might be because of a malfunctioning tower/antenna, but it has been this way for a couple of years.

You may have excellent coverage - that's why the suggestion about asking other folks in your area to confirm coverage.

yeah but i want coverage in a metro place like Dallas - even if i don't live close to Dallas. i often travel the country and i expect a major city like Dallas to have at least 3G! maybe not 4G LTE but at least 3G!!! and i mean BLANKET 3G!!! the fact that it does not is disturbing. blanket 3G in all U.S. "major" cities is a minimum threshold!!!

BTW - have you ever been to Ocean Prime? great place! and i love the girls in Dallas! hot AND nice!!!

I hear ya - that's one of the reasons why I'm not on T-mo yet. Do check their coverage maps though - it may work for you. Their coverage map does indicate that almost all of the Dallas metro area is covered by 3g (there are spots that aren't covered obviously - my area for example)

Ocean Prime - yes, it is a really good place!

Re: Any one returning their sprint g nexus for the unlocked g ne

i don't trust carrier coverage maps! i trust real world reviews!

I will be honest, t mobile tried to sell me a device the other day. The salesman showed me the coverage but not for the device. I looked it up on sprint.com (for my device) coverage seems to be way better with sprint. But let me remind you I'm in saint Louis, more in the county so I'm not sure if your coverage would be the same. Also 4g lite isn't out here yet, and plus I heard t mobile uses hpa+ or some signal which is not really 4g.
