Any tricks to getting "New line" deals on Verizon?

Am I missing something? So VZW (and other carriers) have great teaser deals for phones at times...but almost all of them say, "With New Line". (Or new unlimited line.)

If you're a current customer and want to upgrade 1 or 2 phones on your existing plan...will they honor this deal somehow? Can you claim you're getting a new line? Or are they taking that very literally and if you have an existing phone # with them, that's your line...you're SOL?

Has anyone tried adding a line, transferring your existing number to the new line, then canceling the old line on your plan?

I'd be interested also. Years ago you could open a new line and leave it active for a month and then suspend and cancel it. But they closed that loophole. It would be great that what you're saying would be possible. Plus they have the nerve to charge you an upgrade when there's no upgrade discount. But I bought directly from Motorola and avoided the upgrade few.
