Anybody else have zero interest in a 4.5" device

4.3 is as big as I will go, I already have a Tab 10.1 for my larger-screen needs and most 4.5in phones look ridiculous.

A 4.5" edge-to-edge screen could fit into the original Incredible case.

The Ancdroid Central Readers Choice surveys show that 4.3" Displays are Now the Sweet Spot. 8% of readers prefer a 3.5" - 3.7" screen.

Note that the coming displays will be edge-to-edge. With the bezel reduced to almost nothing,

Specs: The Incredible is 4.63" x 2.3" x 0.47" = 4.99 in?. The Atrix is a 4" display but with nearly identicle specs: 4.64" x 2.50" x 0.43" = 4.99 in?

If all the bezel on the Incredible were used as screen the Incredible case could have a 5.1" screen = SQRT(4.63^2+2.3^2)

Even leaving room for a bottom row of buttons a 4.5" edge-to-edge screen will fit into the Incredible case. And it would be thinner.

Here are the new Android Phones discussed so far this month on the Android Central front page:
4.5" Samsung Celox
4.5" Samsung Hercules
4.5" Motorola Droid HD
4.5" HTC Holiday
4.5" LG Revolution 2
4.3 Motorola Droid Bionic
4.3" HTC Amaze
4.3" LG Thrill
4.3" Motorola Photon
4.3" Samsung Attain
4.3" Samsung Epic Touch
4.3" Samsung Function
4.3" Samsung Gravity Smart
4.3" LG Optimus 3D
4.3" HTC Vigor 720p
4.3" Samsung Stratosphere
4.1" Motorola Triumph
3.5" Samsung Conquer
3.2" HTC Bliss
3.2" HTC Wildfire S
3.2" Motorola Pax

17 out of 21 are 4.1" or larger.

Two points.

1 you have to remember it doesn't work the way you're talking about. You can't just say a 5.1" screen will fit in the Incredible body, because the screen ratio would be all wrong. Many here have already said this.

2 I would welcome those 4.3" devices if they're smaller than the current ones. I thought 4.3" was the sweet spot too, while I had an EVO. Once I got a NS4G I enjoyed the phones size more than the lost .3"

The screen dimensions for the Incredible are 1.904w x 3.173h. If you kept the 480 x 800 aspect ratio the 4.5" display would be 2.315w x 3.859h; a hair too large for the 4.63 x 2.3 Incredible. So you are basically correct. However, this assumes absolutely no bezel, which isn't likely to happen as you would be unintentionally touching the screen just about anyway you hold it.

That being said, what you demonstrate here is encouraging. While I do not agree that you could put a 4.5" display on the exact form factor used by the Incredible, you have showed that it could be done on something that is only slightly larger, which I think is fine. Thanks for your input.

After having my Droid 2 for about a year now I am dying to get a phone with a bigger screen. It is such a pain to do web browsing on a phone that small. I can't imagine using one of these low end devices with the 3.2 inch HVGA displays. I think it comes down to 2 things:

If you plan on using your phone as a phone (calls, texts, etc) smaller is better.

If you plan on using your phone as a computer (like I do) a 4.5" is certainly well within reasonable limits.

Personally I don't think I will ever again buy a phone with a screen smaller than 4.3"

It seems like most (Moto Droid HD, Samsung Hercules, HTC Holiday, Samsung Celox etc.) of the recent specification leaks and rumors for upcoming devices include a 4.5" screen. I've used the Droid X and the Thunderbolt and I've found both to be uncomfortably large (insert joke here :p) with a 4.3" screen. I'm excited about the hardware improvements we are seeing in android handsets, but I would like to see something sized closer to my beloved Droid Incredible. I'm just not at all interested in buying a gigantic phone even if they are thinner than a lot of today's Hummer phones. I guess I'm in the minority. Anybody else like to see a high end phone released in the 3.7" to 4" range?
I have none, just my preference. My ideal phone would be the body size of the iP4 or a touch bigger with a 4 inch screen. I have the Xperia PLAY right now and I love the screen size and being able to see it in the sun. Not to mention, the battery lasts a solid two days for me.

I also feel like a 3.7" - 4.0" screen is the ideal size. I've had the iPhone and felt that the screen was a little too small but loved the size of my HTC Trophy (3.8") and Droid Incredible. I'm not one for watching movies or playing games on my phone, so these massive 4.5" and larger screens don't do anything for me. I did just order a Droid Bionic but that was mainly because it didn't make sense for me to waste my upgrade on a 3G phone. I'm really hoping that by next year they're able to shrink down the LTE technology to fit in smaller packages so that I could get a phone the size of the original Incredible with 4G.

Just read this posting and not sure if someone else has responded in kind.
I, for one, am very interested in the 4.5 - 4.7 inch units being talked about and introduced. I'm 66, and my eyesight isn't what it used to be so the larger the better. I just had to sell my darling WP7 Trophy because the screen was 3.7 and the font size was fixed making reading and viewing very hard to do. Technically, no reason for larger screen. Personally, really good reason for larger screen.

My issue lies with the fact that it looks like all "high end"android phones will have 4.5"+ screen going forward. Kinda like how the high end phones are mostly 4.3" screens.

Agreed. Its going to get tough to find d a high end phone with a smaller/normal size form factor

Here's hoping the marktplace will drive the needs for smaller screens withe highe ppi. 4.3 is the sweet spot I think.

My 2 coins

I think that a 4.3 is the biggest that doesn't make you completely ridiculous when using it as a phone.
I have the SGSII and use it a lot for calling. I must admit that there were a few times, before getting used to it, when I felt like a clown with an over-sized phone.
So, 4.3, maybe with HD resolution as it seems it will be possible shortly. Otherwise please make it a tablet.

I agree. That was the reason i went for X10, though it back-fired later :'(. Wish HTC would come with high-end phone in < 4".

It's all about internet browsing to me. I'm all for a 5" screen. I was willing to buy one of the Pocket PC phones way back when they were avail. I just didn't cuz they were on their way out. They were huge! even the Treos were tanks compaired to any Android right now.

I think a 5" wouldn't be much bigger than an Evo or Bionic. So bring it on.

Couldn't really agree more, i have a droid x and it is uncomfortably large. I absolutely never flip it on its side because the keys are far too spaced out. I bought it because video on the large screen was awesome but since july 2010 I have maybe watched 30 videos on it which hardly make the screen size worth it. I would HATE HATE HATE to have to go to an iphone, but if android doesn't come out with a very good high end 4" or less phone by christmas time i'm not gonna have much of a choice. i love the android software, love the four buttons, and love everything else about my phone, but i can't stand having to buy jeans with consideration of fitting a waffle into my pocket.

Gotta agree. I went from an EVO to a Nexus S, and the size and shape of this phone is so much better. I don't miss the brick at all.

After using the Infuse (4.5") for a few months I sure can't go back to the smaller screen. After a week or two of jokes about a "etch a sketch" you get used to the great display and thinness of the device and appreciate the size of pictures, screens, etc.

I made that change as well, and love the phone size (although my aging eyes do miss that slight screen size difference). I'm really hoping that the next phones will have, as rumored, no buttons and thus have a larger screen without a larger body.

Me too. The Nexus is just so much better than the EVO in every way though. This phone is the perfect size

My first time on this site. I'm thinking of going from iPhone to Samsung infuse. I'm a designer and crave a larger screen. Is it true android phones are getting bigger.?Will anyone best the 4.5" screen any time soon? I don't want to buy it tomorrow and see another mfr sell a 5" screen next week!
