Anyone have the 128 GB Version of Ultra

Re: Is 8 GB enough RAM

I have a s21 ultra 512/16 that I am thinking of trading in for the s22 ultra. I really miss the Note line and the spen is very important. My question is, will I see a big performance drop going from 16 to 8 gb of ram or is the virtual ram option really a help?

If you get anything over 128GB storage you do get the 12GB of ram. If you're already used to a 512 phone, I'm sure you'd opt for extra storage so I doubt you'd really notice the drop from 16 to 12 ram.

If you're planning to keep your phone for more than 1-2 years I would not recommend the 8GB option. That extra 4GB of RAM may or may not make a notable difference on the performance side in the next couple versions of Android but better to have the safer bet.

Does anyone notice a difference in RAM with the 128GB model?

So I upgraded from a 128GB S20 Ultra which had 12GB of RAM and I just noticed the S22 Ultra 128GB model only has 8GB of RAM. Is this going to be a problem? 4GB of RAM seems like a big difference.

It depends what you are doing with the phone I personally noticed a difference I've used the eight and 12 gig versions of the 22

I have the 128 with 8 RAM. No issues so far. I was a bit concerned when I got the phone but that was all that was available. I use an iPhone7 as my music player and online storage synced with my windows computer allows for less that has to live on the phone. I have been being careful, but I am probably being more cautious than I need to be. I have everything on the phone that I need and still have 72Gb free. If I used it for my downloaded music, took more videos that I wanted to keep on the phone, played a lot of games, or did a lot of editing that used a lot of RAM, I might be regretting not waiting for the bigger version. But so far so good.

What kind of difference did you notice? Was everything faster with the 12GB version? ...or were you able have more apps open without choppiness?

The reason I was skeptical about the difference is because the S22/S22+ have 8GB (and let's be honest, does the S22U have so much more going on that it needs 4 more GB over the S22+?) and as I understand it, they perform great...but perhaps I'm mistaken.

The more programs open at one time, the more RAM is needed. My personal opinion is if using the S22U more like the Note then yes, more RAM the better. If using it primarily like just a phone and sometimes used for limited computer purposes such as surfing the net, reading an article, reading a document, etc. then 8gb should be more than enough.
My Pixel 4XL has 6gb and never had a problem.
However, I knew a person who used a NOTE for business and could have dozens of documents open at one time and wanted instant access when open, so for her, a lot of RAM was needed.
The extra RAM offered on the S22, is swapped out of the storage memory of 128gb. Should have a very lot latency (being fast) since all memory on the phone is solid state. (I can remember decades ago, when adding RAM by taking it from storage was very slow since storage was on a hard drive. I always noted the difference back then of having needed RAM vs, RAM accessed from storage was the difference between running down the street to get a beer vs. reaching over to the table to access a beer.)

I use a lot of apps at once and the ability to handle them is much more apparent on the 256 12G than the 128 8 g. I run multiply food delivery apps and a map as well.

Haven't read throughout this entire thread, but looks like Samsung.com (US) selling the 256 for the price of the 128, and 512 for the price of a 256 at the moment.. Not sure how long that sale will last. So you could go ahead and purchase the 256 and not worry about the 128 ram size.

Plus still giving great trade in value.

I always like to have a backup phone. I replaced my backup iPhone 13 Pro Max with an S22U/128. I don't notice any difference in performance between it and my S22U/512. Perhaps I should run benchmarks on them both and see what that shows

I wish we would have upgraded back when you got a 512 for the price of $256 cuz I don't care about accessories. But we're trading in for $1,000 plus $100 accessory. I would have rather have gotten a hundred off the phone but it's okay it's still a good deal. And we're getting a couple 45 watt charging bricks in a couple extra $10,000 battery packs so we're good. But I asked the same question we were worried going from 16 to 12 but we're told it's not a big deal we won't notice much difference.

8 GB might be just fine... now. But if you hold on to the phone for 2 or 3 years then who knows. Android 13... 14... 15... 16 (4 years of OS updates)... who knows if 8 will be enough.

Of course many here won't be holding it for more than a couple of years. ;)

I think that was only for the pre-orders.

No. It was available for their promotion that lasted through Mother's day. "Mother's Day offer" Free upgrade to 256 GB. Today it's showing "$100 Samsung Instant Credit" but it's the same thing.

I don't think the $100 credit was there at the beginning of what is currently their Memorial Day promotion but is now.

You just have to keep an eye on the Samsung site and check daily.

During Mother's Day promotion they gave me $950 trade-in value for my N20U. After Mother's day I think it was $650. Today it's $800.

So I ordered a S22U with free upgrade to 256GB and $950 trade-in for my N20U for $250 before tax (taxed on the $250 only thank you Florida ;))

They are constantly offering discounts all year. Just gotta watch the waves and jump when it looks good.

So you noticed a performance difference between the S22 Ultra with 8GB ram and the S22 Ultra with 12 GB ram but you still went with the 128GB 8GB S22U?

Also, you went from an S21 Ultra to the S22 Ultra? Just wondering why since I'm not really sure it would be worth the cost of upgrade (but I don't own an S21U to really know). I think I remember you from either the N8 forums and maybe the N20U forums... mainly missed the S-Pen?

Enjoy your new phone. :)
