Anyone Know How To Get Stock E4GT Boot Animation?

I recently switched to the Calkulin ROM but wanted back the original Sprint Epic Touch 4G boot animation with sound. I've done some searching but so far I do not know where to download this and exactly what file to replace.

Thanks to anyone who can point me to the fix.

I'm not an expert on bootanimations, but I think this may be a tough one. Samsung creates their boot animations using a proprietary file format called a .qmg file. I don't know of anywhere that someone converted the stock bootanimation for the E4GT, to a bootanimation.zip format, which is what you would need with Calkulin's ROM. Calkulin's ROM looks for either a bootanimation.zip or sanim.zip file in the /system/media folder for the boot animation.

So, if you want the stock E4GT boot animation, you have to run the stock ROM and stock kernel. :'(

I personally use a Samsung Galaxy SII boot animation, which is an animated glowing 'S' that I like, along with the stock E4GT boot sound. If you're interested in these I can attach the files here with instructions on how to get them on your phone.

Haha okay. I just looked at Calkulin's ROM and he actually includes the same bootanimation in his ROM that I was referring to, so I doubt you'd want that. I'll post up some instructions on how to change your boot animation and/or sound in a bit when i have some time.

Okay I gained some more insight into this last night. The piece of the puzzle that causes the phone to use a bootanimation.zip file rather than Samsung's .qmg files comes from the kernel. Calk's ROM (as do many) use one of Steady Hawkins' kernels repacked with Clockwork Mod recovery. SH also always adds bootanimation.zip support, which makes the phone refer a different binary file which is part of the ROM files.

So to get the stock bootanimation back, you'd need to flash a kernel that does not have bootanimation.zip support, or in other words, a kernel that has not been repacked with CWM such as the stock un-modified EL29 kernel. The big downside here is you would lose CWM, which probably isn't worth it in the end. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of a stock EL29 kernel packed with CWM but that does not also include bootanimation.zip support.

So there's that. If you're interested in changing your bootanimation.zip, here's how to do it ...

First you're going to need File Manager that can access root and has read/write privileges. The most popular is Root Explorer, which is a paid app. A nice free alternative is ES File Explorer. With ES, you would need to modify the settings to enable Root access as well as Mount read/write (or something along those lines ... it's been awhile). With Root Explorer, you would need to click the R/W button at the top right on the folder where you will be copying files.

So first, place the bootanimation file you want on your phone somewhere. Then, navigate to /system/media and look for the bootanimation.zip file. Rename that to something like bootanimation.zip.bak. Then go to the place where stored the new file, hold down on it and select copy. Then navigate back to /system/media and paste it. Also ... sometimes you will need to rename your file to sanim.zip, but I don't think that will be necessary for you. I believe Calk's binary file is set to look for either file name.

For boot sound, you would follow the same procedure as above, except you would paste the PowerOn.wav file in /system/etc. I've attached the stock E4GT PowerOn file to this reply.

I know this sounds stupid but it would avoid all the technical hassle. What if you just took a video of Samsung bootanimation and converted that video to .zip, how bad would that really look?

Terrible probably, and it's not that simple. The bootanimation.zip is a collection of single frame images saved in the .png format, with a text file that tells the phone the order to play the frames, how fast and other such instructions.

I'm no video editor but couldn't this be done? In the sense that you can convert a video into a animated gif or in this case a .png series?
