Anyone try gingerbreak with 4.1.83

Seems I can answer my own question here. Yes, in fact it does work!

Now, I have to flash back to stock then upgrade.

Anyway, here's what I did if it saves anyone the trouble:

1) Install RSD lite. If you don't know what this is, or haven't done this before, use these awesome directions.
2) Download 4.1.83 sbf ... FYI the owner of this link claims that he did not sign an NDA and therefore NDA restrictions do not apply.
3) Use RSD lite to flash 4.1.83
4) Use Gingerbreak to root
5) Use Gladenable for sideloading & custom tethering

So, the reason why I went this method was because I had totally screwed with the stuff in my /system/apps in my .57 ROM and and I didn't want to take an OTA. Moreover, actually I couldn't d/l an OTA... said no updates were available.

Anywho, hopefully this is helpful for someone out there who hasn't gotten their OTA yet, or for those that want to root with .83 and had made changes to /system like me.

Disclaimer: If you screw things up, it's your own fault... :P Good news is, with RSD you can probably unbrick most anything.

So your saying that if I just sideload Gingerbreak.apk on my phone with 4.1.83, I can just click it, click root and its gonna root my phone? I have 4.1.83 on here.

If thats the case, how do you go about unrooting it if need be?

Hmm Rebooting after rooting and sideloading Gingerbreak. I might just be conversating with myself like you did earlier lol! Will report back!

SWEET!! It worked! And that was pretty easy! Thanks for the tip.

Well, I'm not sure if it's entirely convenient to do this, but you can always flash 4.1.8.3 again to unroot.

When I root, I just don't root, I always screw with things--like removing apps I don't want, removing blur stuff etc. So for me I'd rather just get back to a clean slate each time anyway.

I am a novice when it comes to android but i really want the update do i need the root to install 4.1.83? please help thanks

You do not need root to install OTA, you just have to wait your turn:)

Root is not needed to follow the process stated in my above post.

I just upgraded to 4.1.8.3 and it broke my root. I just ran Gingerbreak again and all is well.
Better 3G speeds as well. (No 4G here in Mexico)

Just rooted my Atrix late last night. Yes, I used GingerBreak for the rooting, and it was quick and painless. It's probably as good as it's going to get, since we're dealing with a locked and encrypted bootloader, just like the Droid X. That being said, my DX has been rooted since last Fall, and sometimes a week or more goes by without me even thinking about the DX locked bootloader. It's really a minor inconvenience, and certainly hasn't deterred the developers from writing roms and themes for the DX. I fully expect that pattern to follow with the Atrix.

Bring on the future!

I will say I rooted my phone last night. Got the Atrix Friday and by Sunday it was rooted followed quickly by non-Market installs and then the Amazon App store.. Not bad for my first Android phone.

What kind of speeds ?before and after .. Thanks! trying to decide on atrix
Or Inspire .

Download speeds have nothing to do with being rooted, if that's what you're asking.

And actually, it's latency--not bandwidth--that's the killer for me.

Gingerbreak worked well

Thank you very much for posting this=) I've been waiting for a painless method to root my Atrix again. I had recently unrooted for the last update, but was really bummed that I couldn't hotspot until I could get root access again. Thanks
