Anyone use their EVO as their sole GPS?

Mine shows up in the top "alert" bar. I can easily switch back and forth to it by pulling down the notifications bar and just tapping on it.

I have left my music player (Pandora or Slacker Radio) up, and the voice prompts still happen so it still runs in the background.

cool, that's what i thought.

Hmm. Ok, well this deff gives me more info.
I guess for as map challenged as I am, I will just get a seperate GPS again and just use the phone as a backup in case I need it or forget my GPS, or with someone else who needs directions type deal.

I like to have the freedom of talking on the phone and seeing a map and hearing directions still.
Its great it has this functionality though.

Thanks for the quick response guys. Deff seems like a very good forum!!

There is a mapping solution, I believe is around $15 in the Market, that uses just sattelite info so you don't have to worry about being in cell range to initiate and use. I can't remember the name right now.

definitely. One of the main reasons I wanted the EVO so bad is because coming from WinMo there were no really good free GPS programs. sprint nav has always been ok but its very plain and in my opinion, ugly. I LOVE Android Navigation and the different layers and customizations are great. Stand alone GPS' have some definite positives but find a way to prop your evo up in your car, get a USB cigarette lighter plug like this one: 2-Port USB White Car Charger Adaptor for Ipod - Get great deals on items on eBay.com!

for $1 and use your standard USB charge cable and you will have a great GPS AND you have the power of the internet in your hand as well. Something many GPS' lack.

I have an old school Garmin, a C330 or something like that, with 2007 maps. My wife has a newer Garmin. I hardly ever use mine, it was simply a hand-me down as I got my wife a new unit. So, I think I'm going to retire or give away my Garmin as the odd occasion where GPS is required, I can just use my Evo instead.

Already I've put it through its paces, when on a business trip and needing to navigate around Seattle, Redmond, Bellevue...

Drove from Mesa, Arizona to Edison, NJ using Sprint Navi last year using my Instinct. So far my Google Nav and Sprint Nav experience with my Evo is like comparing a model t to a Ferrari. So ya I'd say you're good lol

do you guys plug these into your radio via an Aux cable and have it go through the speakers? Or just do the voice through the speaker on the phone?

wait..whats the model t and whats the ferrari? ;)

I plan to use it as my primary GPS once they have a freaking car kit out on the market. I tried a couple of different "Universal" car kits but they just don't work for me. I have a Garmin and I have used my EVO for a few trips at the same time as my Garmin. (I travel for a living) so far the EVO/Google Navigation is pretty good and accurate. I have run both my EVO and Garmin at the same time and they both seem to give me the same directions. I wish the EVO/Google Navigation showed you your speed while driving. Over the years I have totally abandoned the speedometer in the car and primarily use the one on the Garmin (I keep my Garmin up and running even when not using navigation just for the speedometer) Once a good custom car kit hits (I hear late July) I am going to use the EVO for any trips I take...

I wouldn't plug it up to my car speakers.. Even with the Garmin I have the volume turned off as I just pay attention to it while driving... Specially on long trips.... I use to use the voice and street name directions but over time that really gets annoying (IMO) so I just use the visual screen for navigation....

ive never used any GPS besides Sprint Navigation. My ex had a garmin and my Sprint Navigation was WAY more accurate than hers. Now I only use Google Nav. I don't think I will ever buy a GPS.

I drove from Chesapeake VA to Pageland SC last year using nothing but sprint nav on my pre.

Lmao. Evo = Ferrari Instinct = Model T... (more like a ****ing wagon but I'll be nice. HATED that phone.. But it was my first touch screen phone though)

Ah I thought you were referring to the Sprint Nav vs Google Nav, like the Ferrari was Google and the Model-T was Sprint.. or vice versa haha.. I've never used Sprint Nav but Google Nav ROCKS.

Just keep in mind Google navigation take you through the shortest route rather than the fastest. This can be a little inconvenient other than that its replaced my current garmin. Also it kills battery so keep a car charger handy.

There are other options besides Google nav and sprint. Copilot is available on Android too and it works great.

I used Google nav from balitmore, maryland to San Diego, Ca the week after the phone came out. I had cell reception the entire way and google nav worked the entire time. i did have an issue with google nav and pandora at the same time though... I just switched to cd's and didnt have problem.
