Anyone waiting for root?

I used to root because I wanted to be able to use wi-fi hotspot for free (I know, I know you should pay for it, but I was already paying for data so that is how I justified it), and I wanted a more pure Android experience. Now though the plan I am on comes with 10GB a month hotspot, and although not pure Android, the Google phones are pretty damn close. So I see no need to root at this point.

seriously though I had way lots of fun with root way back in the day with my Motorola Photon. After that phone though I was done. Root didn't really let me do things I wanted that I couldn't do with apps.

I agree. When my phones were paid off via the 18 month agreement with ATT I usually rooted them and put cyanogenmod on them - just to escape the carrier BS. With Project FI that's a non issue so I am happy with stock.

As a side note, the S4 was a pain to "root".

no bull**** apps... no garbage skins...I don't know what sites your going to, but ads aren't a real problem. What is a problem is Netflix and Elder Scrolls Legends are blocked.

I used to spend a lot of time rooting and flashing phones. But its just so time consuming setting up phones all the time.
But with the Pixel phones...what can be gained from a ROM? The only thing I would like is to be able to change the "squeeze" to activate the camera.

I used to root my phones also, but haven't done it in quite a while. All the stuff I wanted when rooting are available now in stock Android. I also like using Android & Samsung pay.

It’s not just ads. It’s the really heavy JavaScript that makes everything load slowly and the tracking across sites. I hate it.

What do you mean Netflix not working? It’s working fine for me.

Nope. Not interested in rooting for now. I've got 2 working Nexus 6s available if I want to get flashy.

Actually, now that I'm more familiar with the shortcomings of the 2 XL display, I would consider rooting iff some dev came up with a reasonably uncomplicated solution to those shortcomings (esp. the black crush business and the lack of color calibration/options). But I'd much rather Google took care of those things at their end. I'm really hoping 8.1 makes me eat my own gripey words.

The workarounds to allow Android Pay to function on a rooted device concern me. Also, as has been stated earlier in this thread, I no longer require root for anything of interest to me; in the past, yes, but no longer.

Will root to get rid of ads and start using Titaniam backup again. I used to read a lot of sites on my phone when I was rooted. My Note was never rootable and pages I used to read are unreadable now with full screen popups and such. Now I only read a few sites with paywalls and minimum ads. The rest I read on my PC.

Never used Android Pay, does it work at many places now to make it even worthwhile to set up? What is your concern with root and Android Pay? Security? I don't worry about such things, if my card number gets stolen I am not on the hook for any scammer charges as long as I report them promptly (not that it ever happens more than once every 3 - 5 years). Just last night I hand my CC to the waiter who walked away with it for almost 5 minutes, now the whole restaurant could have my card numbers!

Android Pay will not allow itself to be setup or used if it detects the phone is rooted or the ROM is not factory original. That's good enough for me; any workarounds that allow Android Pay to function are suspect in my mind.

As to Android Pay itself, I use it mainly at grocery stores - most all of which in my area support it. Other stores as well, but primarily grocery stores as that is primarily where I seem to shop. Oh yeah, places like McDonald's, Burger King, Dunkin' Donuts, etc., etc. - but I rarely do fast food these days.

Now you use Android pay with root.

I root every device I have owned. I'm looking forward to adaway and tethering. Also use titanium to back everything up.

I have hotspot, and Nova backup so I no longer bother with rooting or roming. Tho I'm glad it's there if I wanted to.

I'm to used to the double volume press for that, I want the squeeze to turn on the flashlight...
