app size, phone vs sd card

It seems that apps moved from the phone to the sd card take up much less space. For example I moved a 14 MB app to the sd card and it shows as only 1 mb now. Many other cases of apps going from huge to tiny. Why is this? Does the sd card use a better allocation of space than the phone. I only looked at this on the dx, so I don't know if it is phone specific.

What that means is that 13MB of the 14MB app was able to be moved to the SD card. 1MB is what stayed on the phone.
