App that displays txt preview without waking up the phone?

Is there an app that shows a text message preview from the lock screen without having to wake the phone up?

My iPhone used to display a preview by automatically waking up and showing a text box at the unlock screen.

I've been using Handcent SMS as a replacement for the text app and this displays a message at the lock screen but I still have to wake up the phone manually to view it. It be nice to be able to glance down at the phone and see the message then determine if I need to reply right away or not.

this is my 1st android phone so im not really sure but right after u get a text and u hit your unlock button it will say it on the screen still.your best bet is to put your message icon app in one of the 4 lock screen apps like i did, this way u can launch it with the ring...

You can do that with Go SMS. And you have the option to set how long the screen to be on (10, 15, 30 sec....)

Yeah, but I want it to display a preview without having to interact with it at all; e.g. not waking it up by pressing the unlock button.

Go SMS sounds like it's got that feature embedded in the app so I'll give that a try: thx danperde

Just an update...
I installed Go SMS and although it has an option to wake up on notification it's not quite what I expected.
Rather than showing a non-distracting 'preview' of the message it simply unlocks the whole phone, placing you right where you were before the phone went to sleep. Just now I was in the Marketplace and put the phone down, it went to sleep and then I got a message. It opened up right back to the Marketplace, I had to navigate back to my messaging app to read the txt.

Handcent has a nice preview popup window but it doesn't appear if the phone is asleep (although it does appear at the lock screen if the screen is already awake) and it's also a bit delayed. It likes to show messages from a couple chats prior.

It works for me. When I get a SMS the screen turns on and displays a popup window with the message. do you still have to pull the ring to unlock the phone for the preview to show up?
So far I can get the preview to appear but not until I unlock the phone. There is an unlock phone option but then it opens the phone to whatever screen you were in before it went to sleep.

I kinda expected the popup to appear on the face of the lock screen with option to reply.

I'll fuss with it some more...

After some serious rooting around in Handcent's settings I was finally able to get it to do exactly what I want. FYI there's which enables a fix in newer Android 2.2 and above revisions.

So now with the phone completely asleep, I'll get a vibrate and tone notification, the phone will soft wake up and show a small message preview at the lock screen. I can even choose how I want the preview to be displayed. Lite, Full, or no reply.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll stick to Handcent since I've already gotten used to it.
