Apparently, the battery in the S8 is much less likely to catch fire when damaged.

It is still very early days as of this time to truly know if Samsung has truly eradicated (for the most part) the battery fires that plagued the Note 7 to the point of extinction, but according to this video (right near the end), it would seem that despite having a similar design to the aforementioned Note 7 (even down to watts), it seems that the very way it's made may have been changed.

In the video, instead of catching fire/sparking when it was cut into/punctured, the battery seems to vent, and when punctured after, there seems to be no reaction, although there might not be much stuff for it to react with after the venting.

Although the very design and power ratings are pretty much identical to that of the ill-fated Note 7, this seems to indicate that the very way it was made could have been significantly different to reduce fire risks. In a way, this is actually optimistic, although as mentioned before, it's pretty early days.

It remains to be seen if it will fail. Samsung released why they failed a few months ago because of poor quality control and the batteries were shorting out both times for different reasons. Hopefully they don't go up in smoke.
