Apple loses lawsuit for not including charger...

Guess I was lucky enough to get the 45watt charger for my Note 10+ for only 10 bucks. It's certainly worth it for that. Would I pay 50 dollars for something like that? Hell no.

I think there are a couple of things we should try to bear in mind here. Firstly, we may have some "enthusiast bias"... I'm not sure how many people who upgrade their phone every 4 or 5 years have a drawer full of chargers.

Secondly, to deconstruct my own flippant analogy, a spoon is durable technology, a charger is not. Shortly after buying my S21 ultra, the charger I received with my s10e died. So what did that mean? I had to buy a new charger. Which had to be shipped to me separately in its own packaging, in its own shipping box, in its own van. Sorry environment.

I feel that charging bricks should be included with phones. I'll compare it with power tools. If I buy multiple tools from say Skil, each tool comes with its own charger. I don't have to use the same charger for each tool of the same brand or buy additional chargers if I get new tools.

And then you start to read all the feedback from those that bought the new optional 45 watt brick and find out it doesn't really decrease charging times much anyway. Maybe by a few minutes if charging from a dead battery, but not worth the extra cost.

It's WAYYYY better than 5w, can we agree on that?

It's like buying an appliance say a refrigerator/TV and they tell well in order to use it the cord comes now separately for an additional 50.00

You need a cable and brick C'mon at least the basic lol

What kills me is how they still include the charging cable. Like... Come on, really? Are you just messing with us here? Giving us the cable and no charging brick lol

Especially when the charging cable is USB-C to USB-C. Those weren't a thing a couple of years ago, and we're supposed to do something with these cables?!

For every one of you that may need the charger included, there's hundreds, if not thousands of buyers that don't need it. While that excess packaging and such may increase your specific environmental impact, the environmental impact overall goes down.

I own several Ryobi power tools. With them, one battery works across the board. I bought a starter kit work a couple tools, 2 batteries, and charger. Later on, I only have to buy the tools, which they also sell without batteries and chargers. I can also buy batteries and chargers separate from the tools. I think that's the better way to go, both for them and phone manufacturers.

The difference here is you aren't moving your refrigerator and tv from room to room. The cords for them are also good for the life of the appliance in most cases, making it a 1 to 1 use. Not the case with phones, where cables break and people have chargers all over the place.

Just making a comparison the way things are going , it's stupid!
You may have 100 cables and bricks the next few don't . The s22u doesn't come with a brick and it now can fast charge 45w they couldn't include that ? I didn't have a 45w charger until recently what about others that dont have it .. ahh wait they still have their 5w charger that should do from 5 years ago

But how much savings in emissions exactly? Apple says this move “and helping partners reduce carbon footprint will result in eliminating the carbon equivalent of over 50,000 cars from our roads per year.”

Taken from:

The thing is, in 2016, there were an estimated 115 million cars on the road...PER DAY. so really, is 50,000 in a year really anything worth mentioning? No.

What about the trucks that have to deliver the chargers that customers order separately? If chargers were included only one shipment not two.

Exactly. Maybe if these companies actually followed through on their "commitment" to being green, then they might also say, "no charger in box because we want to cut down on cars on the road...which means you can't order one to be delivered or drive to the store to buy one. Now you have to bike or walk, otherwise one won't be sold to you".

But then, it would just sound stupid. Oh wait, it's already stupid. Apple alone saved 6.5 BILLION by excluding things they used to package as part of the iPhone experience. I wonder how much of those savings were reallocated to environmental impact and improvement?

This thread and all the comments from others mentioning and displaying all the excess chargers they have that they don't even use.

Being a trucker, I can say that the amount of extra emissions generated by adding a charger is so negligible as to be almost non-existent. Trucks are designed to carry offer 40,000 lbs of product, 80,000 lbs total. You wouldn't notice a difference in performance or fuel mileage with or without chargers being included. The bigger environmental impact is in the manufacturer of what will become just another brick of e-waste. I.e. Production of plastics, pcb's, metals, chips, etc, including some toxic chemicals used in their production.

Just my 2cents:

Apple has been doing many things within its headquarters and with their products to reduce waste and carbon emissions. This is just one example. It all adds up. If you want to believe our planet isn’t in trouble and we shouldn’t try to change then there’s not much to discuss.

Most people, if they’ve ever owned a smartphone, have multiple chargers.

If you’ve ever bought an electric dryer you know it doesn’t come with the power cord, that is extra. It’s been that way for quite a while. Just saying.

I think Laura was referring to more Trucks to deliver those packages therefore more Trucks to pollute the roads.

It just doesn't make sense , they don't include because protect environment but you can order a charger and cable online and will come with its own box Plus the shipping box that save the environment.

If Apple doesn't want include it ok then offer for free as option to be delivered separately because that's what your going to be doing if you need or want one but wait they want you to pay for it .

Honestly I just wish that people would stop thinking this was even remotely an environmental move, or that these companies are being altruistic with the move to take things out of the box. Folks giving Apple and Samsung props just irks me because it means the propaganda worked, and they're getting over on the public. That turns my stomach.

The truth is that all of these companies are giving people less, and they've spun it in a way where we're actually thanking them for it. They say they're saving the environment and that they're reducing their carbon footprint. They say they're saving on gas and waste by not including the charger.

But here's the thing...they're still making the chargers! Just because it's sitting in the store, it doesn't mean it doesn't have a footprint. They're making the same amount of product, you just have to buy it separately now. Same deal with the box. It takes up less space on a truck...but that only means they can fit more boxes. Guess what? More boxes means more product. I am willing to bet that they have sold increasingly more phones every year, which means that at best, everything balances out. Yeah, they can fit more in a single truck, but because they're selling more phones than they did 5 years ago, they still need the same amount of trips, if not more, which means more trucks, more gas, more smog.

If they TRULY wanted to help the environment, here are just a few of the things they could have done:
-Get rid of all the paperwork...just have it on the phone.
-Get rid of the plastics in the packaging and make it all out of recycled materials.
-go to a 2 year cycle with phones and focus on software updates and meaningful developments instead of the painfullly obvious incremental upgrades to nickel and dime us every year
-incentivize people to buy just the phone by giving a deep discount if you only want the phone. Hell, give them a bigger discount for buying the phone in store without a box!
-discontinue the lightning port and chord, as they are painfully outdated and are Apple's last attempt at holding on a proprietary technology that people HAVE to buy
-STOP making 5w charging bricks!

I could go on and on, but you get the idea. These companies shouldn't be thanked, and keeping 5 lbs of e-waste out of the landfill isnt worth anything when you're still producing 1 million pounds of it.
