Are separate Ringtone and notification volumes possible in ICS?

Has anyone figured out how to set separate volumes for ring tones and notifications in ICS?
There are times when I need the option to turn off my other alerts but still be able to receive emergency phone calls. You can use a profile manager to set the notification sound to silent, but that only works if all of your notifications use the default sound.
I use separate notification sounds to help let me know the priority of the mailbox receiving the message.
This was possible in 2.2 and 2.3 but I can't find a way to do it so far in 4. All of the apps that have separate sliders for notifications and ringtone volumes result in both changing.

For my work purposes this results in ICS being unusable for me.

Does anyone have any theories I can try.

Try Audio Manager. Should give you more specific settings there between system, notification, and ring.

Audio Manager, Sound Manager, and Audio Guru all give you separate sliders for the Alerts and ringer, but when you change either of them it results in both being changed. With Audio Manager I can't see that it changed both until you exit and go back into the program. In 2.2 and 2.3 I had a check box in the system settings to unlink Ringtone and Notification volume. Once that was unchecked the sliders worked correctly. I can't find that option in ICS.

Google & download a silent MP3, use profile manager or tasker to change notification sound to silence mp3 when required. Voila.

It does not exist. I am really unhappy about this. Android combined the system volumes for notifications and ringer into one, so they cant be separate anymore. If you want to be able to get calls, you also HAVE to get emails and other notifications as well, no way to just have calls get through.

I wonder why they did this? It doesn't really affect me because when want to go silent, I want to be silent. However, I can see how having the ability to customize would be advantageous. Customization is the main reason that many us choose android after all.

This doesn't solve the problem. If you have different notification sounds for different apps, for example one sound for email and a different sound for text messages, neither will be silent with this method. The only thing silent with that method is anything that uses the default notification sound.

I'm very disappointed that notification and ringer are not separate as well. This is like the first thing I noticed within 10 minutes of owning of the phone. I hope an update will come that will allow for it. If i remember correctly, when I first got my OG Droid, it was this way as well, but the update to 2.1 (Eclair) came shortly thereafter, and had the 2 volumes split.

I think what I'm going to do is set my mail to the default notification and use the silent method for notifications. At least I will still be able to get phone calls through the night. Since I use a non-default notification for my messaging too, I'll get text messages through the night (undesired), but most times this won't be an issue.

Another option is to use a profile switcher like Tasker or Setting Profiles (what I use) and make two profiles:
1. Silent - profile set it to silence your ringer
2. Ring - profile to set your desired ringer volume

Now make a rule to trigger your "Ring" profile based on incoming call condition. The condition could be a call from a specific person, or persons from particular groups in your address book. Use the * wildcard if you want the condition to include calls from anyone. You can piggy back conditions so that, for example, you can add a time condition so the rule might only be activated at a certain time of day.

So what you have now is 2 profiles, one that mutes ALL sounds (thanks to ICS) and another that sets the ringer volume to a specific level. Set the "Ring" profile to have a higher priority, that way when they are both active at the same time, the "Ring" takes precedence.

Combined with your condition, the result should be, ALL of your sounds are muted, but when a call comes in, it triggers the incoming call condition, triggers the "Ring" profile, and both the mute and the ring profiles are active at the same time, and the ring profile will win. There might be a short delay, but it shouldn't be noticeable.

This would of course have the effect that certain calls will ALWAYS ring and maybe sometimes you truly do want to silence your phone. To that, you will just make another profile, call it "True Silent" for example, and have it silence everything and give it the highest priority (or at least higher then the "Ring" profile) and then when you activate that profile, it will win over the others.

I found a solution that works for my needs. Ringleader allows you to set up profiles that you can change any or all of your individual ringtones to silent in one click.
It takes a while to configure. Once you install it you have to set all of your ringtones and alerts again using the Ringleader option for choosing alerts. If you set it as the default ringtone chooser option it simplifies the process. Once you have reset each one they will shop up in the Ringleader options list.
In Ringleader you then save a base profile. After you have a base profile saved you can edit all of the alert sounds individually through Ringleader and save new profiles.
I have three profiles. One is for normal use, one for phone calls only and one for silent. There is a simple widget available for switching them quickly.

I still think Google needs to restore the option to separate the alerts and ringer volumes.

I am new on this site & continue to learn from the bloggers on apps... I just tried a recommended app to help customize ringtones notifications & volumes... the app is called "Simple Sound Profile"... may be referred to as a widget. It works great similar to my BB & was easy to use. )

I found an app called "ICS Enhanced Ringer Control", it does exactly what it says, easy to use. $2.99
Seems to work perfectly. I think $2.99 is a bit much, but easy to use and works well. Quick on/off, easy to adjust. Would love to have saved profiles, but it works!

As rabscuttle mentioned previously, similar functionality can be achieved with RingLeader Pro. The actual notification volume can't be set separately, but notifications can be silenced, while still allowing the phone to ring.

For anyone not opposed to installing a custom ROM, AOKP M3 actually has the ability to have separate ringer and notification volumes.

It doesn't look like Simple Sound Profile works in 4.0.4

But here's an idea.. Use any profile app from the market, and just use the "Silent" ringtone for notifications.

It is working like a champ on my Galaxy S II with ICS and Apex launcher. I just wish either Simple Sound Profile had ability to change WiFi or WhoIsIt would get an update so that it worked on ICS.

Yes, I've been using the Ringer Control app successfully, as well.

I use it in conjunction with the Sound Manager app, so that I am able to set schedules for volume control of each category. The only thing you need to be careful of, is that if you need to really mute your phone, you need to open Ringer Control and clear the enable setting temporarily, since it overrides the system settings when enabled.

Try Audio Control, it's by far the best volume management app in the Google Play store. There is both a notification and ringer volume for ICS or Jelly Bean.
Really helpful developer too.
