Are you disappointed that Sammy removed phone capabilities for the US?

Unlike its European brother, the US version of the Galaxy Tab can't be used as a phone. After all the wait, I am really disappointed with Samsung and the US carriers. I know what some of you are thinking, 'you want to hold a 7inch tablet/phone to your face?'. Well, you don't. You can only use the speaker/mic or a bluetooth headset, at least in the European model. Which is what I wanted anyway. I would have loved to be able to switch between my iPhone and this by just switching the SIM card. (I develop for both platforms)

Maybe I'll grab the future WIFI-only version. I wouldn't like to be tied to a 2-year contract for a device that can't make calls.

How about all of you? Disappointed? Does this affect your interest in buying this device? (considering the European version can do phone calls)

The only reason I am disappointed is that I have an line that I was going to start using through the Tab.

Otherwise...bring it on!

If we see some comparable plans to the iPad data plans it should be good. I wouldn't want to pay for text and voice that I wouldn't use. This is a tablet and I'm ok with it data only. It is a nice looking device.

So my question is, if the phone is gone, will this just be sold with a data plan like the iPad? I'm looking to save the $10 a month for adding another line.

SMS won't work, but Gtalk will right?

i am quite disappointed. i may still buy though... i have to figure out how google voice or skype works. i also need to find out if i can still upgrade my phone to the Tab.

I will not be buying one because it doesnt have cellphone capabilities. There is no way I'm gonna sign myself up for a data plan with ANY of the carriers.

Also a wifi only version is dumb (even if I get wifi hotspot with my evo) because I end up carrying two devices like I do now lugging around my laptop). If I have to carry two separate devices, I would rather carry my laptop since it can do a LOT more.

Also the wifi only version is probably going to be ridiculously expensive. I would bet more than the iPad since thats what they are being priced in europe right now.

I think Samsung dropped the ball by taking out the cellphone capabilities. I was really looking forward to having an ALL IN ONE device like the tab. I am definitely not buying one now, I will probably wait and see what Moto or HTC has to offer by Q1 of 2011.

I think it is a bummer too - but based on some of the Epic threads I have read, the Samsung's have questionable signal strength issues. I might wait for the wifi version now or see what's next - like the HTC one. Hell, I have tons of iPhone apps, might as well get an iPad!

I don't see why you'd want to make phone calls on a tablet. Plus I have a Galaxy phone. I hope the bigger tablet doesn't have the phone on it either, because I might buy that one, and it'd be a waste of space for me.

the 7 inch tablets are designed for more mobility, so people might want the option to make/receive calls and text messages, all from one device. that way you get to have a tablet and a phone, with the same number assigned to it, and you only have one bill, and one device to carry around instead of two. and no, you would not want to hold it to your head, but bluetooth has been around for several years now.

for larger tablets, phone capabilities make less sense because chances are that most people will not be carrying them around everywhere they go on a daily basis.

Tab + sony watch LCD thingy + BT headset = the future. Your tablet is your communications hub, your watch your display, your headset your voice input/output. If only the watch had a laser pointer...

The US carriers have ruined my future. I bet they are holding back jet packs too.

i dont care about the phone capability, thats what my evo is for. This is primarily for my son and his entertainment so he can stay off of my phone. 3g is good for me, and wifi. outside of the apps im not trying to make this my pc.

Yeah don't bother explaining. I'd see the phone capabilities more useful in the GSM version(s) of the Tab. Have a bluetooth on your ear or have it on speaker phone and browse the web, do whatever at the same time. CDMA however, no simul voice and data.

Was reading a review of the euro version and it made no mention of BT Support for phone calls, but that you have to use a compatible headset via the 3.5mm jack (ugh).

Still for you GSM folks (AT&T, TMO) I wonder if you could import a euro model and just pop in a SIM. Probably worth a shot.

As for me, I'll probably wait for a 10" version since it won't have the phone capability. The only advantage of the smaller size was portability for daily use as a tab & phone (to me).
