are you glad you didn't get the EVO?

My concern is the community support for the epic. That will be my choice. Its like the hero vs the moment which one had more support. As much as I know the hero (I have) got 2/2 and we are waiting for the camera to get working and some small fixes. We also have asop 2.1 which I believe the moment has no where near the sane support. The moment is better then the hero with the fast CPU and keyboard but everyone still went after the hero.

These phones have such impressive specs and are getting so hyped (in the smartphone world at least), that I'm sure they will develop a decent community.

What do u mean community support? It's running Android.. so any thing for Android will be fair game for the Epic? Or is it?

When I say community support check the link I posted above. I mean how much Roms will be out for both devices. Fir instance with the hero you had damageless with tweaked roms and the first to peak them out. You had fresh with very optimized and fast Rome with extras and radio release . You had gphil forgive me if I spelt your name wrong with rom that should have been release from sprint because its stock with out the bugs. You have ic3 with asop like Roms. You have darth with cyanogen Roms. You tons more by my Droid is pissing me off.

Well a community will develop. They are releasing essentially the exact same phone on every carrier in the US as well as shipping GSM versions overseas. This will be very popular.

It is the best phone available on both TMO(by far) and Sprint (by a hair). On Verizon it is tied(better, IMO) with the DROID X, and on ATT it is the only Android phone that doesn't suck(assuming they don't gimp it).

The Moment was not even close to being as hyped as this phone was. It was only released on one carrier and was competing against the Pre and the Hero, both of which IMO were better phones. The situation now is totally different. Besides, Samsung stood by the Moment and updated it to 2.1 reasonably quickly.

Anyway, to answer the original question, I was planning on trading my Pre in for something when I was eligible in September. I never really liked the Evo, but thought it was my only choice. I am pretty happy to see this coming out and will almost certainly be buying it. Then I will have 30 days to decide if I want to use a device that is bigger, heavier and less elegant than my Pre, and pay an extra $10 a month for the privilege. Everything I have seen from this phone seems to suggest that the tradeoffs are worth it. Great keyboard, great display, really smooth interface and some pretty excellent 720p video recording.

At first I was interested in the Epic, especially with only 2 more day to return my Evo. I really considered it. But after looking at it and reading reviews I'm convinced I made the right decision in sticking with the Evo.

1. I'm not even going to pretend I know anything about color depth/saturation/pixels etc. but the Evo looks fine. Coming from a Pre, which according to others has a better screen than the Evo, I haven't noticed any inferiority. Someone would have to show me both phones side by side with the same picture to prove that to me, because in no way does the Evo appear "dull."

2. 3D Gaming? Really? I have a PS3, Wii, and 360... if I need to pass the time while out, I'll play a simple time waster, like doodle jump, or frozen bubbles. And the high performance games I've played on the Evo run fine. Also, with regards to the gpu, (again, not an expert here) the UI runs as smooth as I would want a phone to. Its fast and smooth 99% of the time.

3. Coming from a Pre, I wanted my next phone to have a slide out keyboard. I was hoping that Palm would announce a new device similar to the TP2's form factor, or the Epic 4G's. But after using the Evo for a month, I can really appreciate the sleek form factor of a slab, and no longer have to deal with loose sliders that make the phone feel fragile.

4. Typing on the Evo took some getting used to, but I am now typing at speeds close to if not faster than I could on previous physical keyboard toting smartphones. And although the Epic is only 1.5 mm thicker, why would you want a "thicker" phone? Also, do you really want to flip your phone sideways every time you want to use the keyboard, resulting in a loss of vertical screen real estate?

5. HTC vs. Samsung, check their resumes.

(P.S. Could those app icons look any more like iPhone icons?)

1. Well you don't need to know anything about that to know that the Epic has a nicer screen. Put them side by side and you will notice it. HT pre just had greater color depth, the AMOLED display has greater contrast, more brightness and more saturation. You will notice it.

2. I kinda agree here, in that there is no difference between the two devices, but sometimes you want to play a game on your phone. The real problem is the lack of games for Android. Even WebOS has more games.

3. I'm expecting the build quality on the Epic to be better than the Pre. Most landscape sliders seem to do quite well. palm just dropped hte ball(although in their defense, building such a small, sleek portrait slider is not easy, and my pre still works just fine after one year).

4. The Epic has a virtual keyboard as well(unlike the pre). You don't need to slide out hwen you don't want to. Moreover, the nice big hardware keyboard on the Epic will hopefully let me type faster than I can on my Pre.

5. Tough to argue with this too much. We are taking a bit of a chance with Samsung, but if you look at how much effort they have gone to for this launch, it is clear that they are not going to treat this phone the way they treated the Moment or their dumb phones. This is their halo device.

P.S. The AMOLED display uses less energy displaying black than it does displaying colors, so having the black background there makes sense. The interface does look a little like the iPhone, but the Epic hardware looks pretty unique, unlike the other GS models.

P.P.S. I don't understand how Palm can mess up so badly by not making new hardware available for us early adopters to buy when we are eligible to upgrade after one year. They are losing a lot of their best customers by totally dropping the ball on Sprint. Some people might have considered trading up to even a Pre Plus, but we got nothing. Now I don't have any use for my Touchstone.

I agree with this 100%.

With regards to our touchstones however...

Thats pretty nice. I just looked at my touchstone back and it actually isn't very thick. This seems doable. I haven't seen any pics of the battery compartment on the Epic though.

hey any sample 720P videos or stills out there taken by the EPic? THanks

Yes, they are all basically the same phone. The epic just has a keyboard.

Hmm I think that about seals the deal for me... the EVO's video is horrible in both image and audio (audio sounds like police radio).

The Galaxy S video is hugely improved over the current EVO video's quality.

You bring up a cery good point that this phone is world wide and people just have to port it over to cdma. So it will have more Tom's then the evolution.

I wish it did have a better cemera and a flash.

I'm a current Pre owner and was thinking of purchasing the Evo in August when I'm eligible for my upgrade, but seeing the Epic has me rethinking. I've seen negative comments here and there about the TouchWiz interface but nothing specific. What is it that folks don't like about TouchWiz vs HTC Sense?

Does anyone know what video compression the Galaxy family will use?

Sprint and verizon versions have flash, and as far as I can tell, the camera is pretty good.

YouTube - Samsung Galaxy S Event in NYC Filmed entirely on my Samsung Galaxy S Part 1

The galaxy s launch event filmed on a european galaxy. The quality is really good IMO, especially considering the low light. Outdoors, the colors look pretty good too, and i don't notice much jellyvision.

Anyone know of any other good examples?

That actually amazed me. My friend has an Evo and I wasn't impressed with either the picture or video quality (or screen always looked drab or washed out). The Galaxy S line has good enough video quality to replace a flip hd or the other low end video recorders. I guess Samsung's experience with camcorders and cameras is put to use. Very little compression artifacts and very high and smooth frame rate.

I found another video taken from a Samsung Galaxy s
