After the first five minutes after a reboot, my fingerprint unlocks y phone just fine. After that, my phone prompts for a PIN after unlock. What are the possible causes and solution to this problem?

It's not a problem. It's normal. I don't believe there is a way to change it either.

That's how it's designed. I believe you are given the option to turn it off, when you're setting up the fingerprints.

Now is it just once after reboot, or all the time? Once after reboot is normal, it'll go to your backup security option, pin, pattern, etc.

Settings -> Security - > Automatically lock -> you set how long to wait after sleep to auto-lock device.(5-30 minutes)

Also, set up Smart Lock (in Security also) to add trusted places, devices, etc. where your 6P won't lock.

Nobody is reading question. He says "After the first five minutes after a reboot, my fingerprint unlocks y phone just fine. After that, my phone prompts for a PIN after unlock." I sometimes have the same problem except it is much more random. Maybe every 50 times or so, it asks me for my PIN. I assumed it might be some random security check or something like that, but I don't know for sure.

Unlock using your backup screen lock method

Sometimes you might need to use your backup PIN, pattern, or password:

When your fingerprint isn't recognized after a few tries
After restarting your device
After switching to a different user on the device
After more than 48 hours have passed since you last unlocked using your backup method

The problem is none of these things applies to when it asks me randomly for my PIN.

I agree . . . but at least we can establish that the OS will sometimes prompt for PIN/password when fingerprint unlock is used. Other than after boot, I'm not prompted for my PIN on any predictable basis. Perhaps even more interesting, my 5X asks for the PIN/password randomly, sometimes two or three times in one day. My 6P rarely asks for password except after boot.

Mine only asks for my pin after my fingerprint when I first power up. After that just the fingerprint.

Same here. The only time I have an issue with my pattern unlock coming up is when trying to unlock while using smart lock and locations. Every so often, I have to redo my location, almost like it thinks the latitude/longitude has shifted. Odd but not a big deal.

I'm just guessing here but I think it's simply a security feature. It will always ask for the PIN after fingerprint after a fresh reboot, and then will only ask occasionally after that when the phone is unlocked from screen-off (not rebooted). I see it roughly every few days.

"After more than 48 hours have passed since you last unlocked using your backup method"

If you don't reset your phone semi-frequently, this one should apply to you. I get it every once and a while and now that I see that it is every 48 hours (assuming I haven't restarted the phone and done it that way) it makes sense.

"After more than 48 hours have passed since you last unlocked using your backup method" probably applies unless you reboot your phone more often than once every 2 days, which would be very unusual.

Mine asks me every couple days and it's normal & expected.

I think I know what's happening. It was happening to me. I was using the trick with nova launcher and another app to be able to lock my screen by double tapping it. After I did away with it the behavior stopped. I've gone an entire week without rebooting my phone and in that time not once was I asked for pin. Now pin is only required after reboot, as it should be.

PIN after Fingerprint Unlock

My device at times asks for my PIN after I "unlock" the phone with one of my enrolled fingerprints. What is causing this? How can I prevent the PIN prompt from displaying after using my fingerprint?

I already know it is recognizing my fingerprint, because it gives one vibration to let me know it recognizes the fingerprint. It gives me two vibrations when I try using a fingerprint that is not enrolled.

Was this after a reboot? It always asks after a reboot.

Re: PIN after Fingerprint Unlock

That was probably it. I feel dumb. Thank you.
