AT&T and the Nexus One

So the rumor is that a version of the Nexus One that will run on the AT&T 3G band is making its way through the FCC. Unlocked, I guess it would sale for around 500 bucks. My hope is that AT&T will offer a subsidized price around $200 for it if you sign up for a 2 year contract. I'll be getting an Android phone on AT&T in June (when I'm eligible for and upgrade), right now I'd love to have the Nexus One, but I can't see paying more than $200 for any phone. So if they don't offer that price point for the Nexus One on AT&T, it looks like I might end up getting the Motorola BackFlip.

I want one now! I've been reading and reading about the Nexus One and I feel like I'm going crazy waiting for the ATT version. Not that I would buy it subsidized on ATT, just that I need the 3G for Pandora streaming while driving :)

to me, there is no point in getting a phone like the N1 unless you will have 3G bandwidth with it. Edge just isn't good enough for the high data demands of a full powered smart phone.

I thought the same thing at first. With wifi all around me and not so bad edge speeds, it's not bad at all.

I don't have wifi at work, nor do I get 3G signal :) but the drive to and from work I like to stream pandora and I would like to use Maps with traffic so I am not sure about an EDGE only device for me.

Maps work fine actually, Pandora on the other hand you will have issues with.

Ditto
I never had a great 3g signal at home to begin with on ATT, but have a strong EDGE. At work I do have a strong 3g but I don't have anytime to use phone unless it is on breaks or lunch. So my Wifi at home (and bars I like to frequent) and the EDGE at work actually work out really well.

The speed that the phone runs on EDGE is quite suprising to me . I came from a BB Bold and the browser speed on 3g was always slow anyways, so this actually isn't too much behind that. Don't get me wrong, 3g is always going to be much faster but coming from the BB browser it isn't as noticable.

All other apps run fast on EDGE i.e. facebook, rss reader. Load up is within seconds. With that all being said, I WILL purchase the ATT 3g band version with my upgrade if it ever comes out. Selling this one and my Bold will recoup my losses.

Well, I get great 3G service most everywhere in NJ except for my office (I work at Verizon Wireless' headquarters). And I am growing very tired of my Blackberry Bold. So, I switched my Bold to 2G mode only and I will try running that way for a week to see if I am hindered in any way. Then I will have a better feel for life without 3G.

Keep in mind that due to processor and browser rendering speeds, the 2G experience on the N1 will be light years ahead of the 2G experience on the Bold, if not as good or better as the 3G experience of that on the Bold.

I was thinking that the Blackberry data runs through the Blackberry servers and I thought that all the data got compressed and sent to the handset that way. I remember reading this somewhere but I don't know if that still holds true today. I am however finding that the 2G experience on the Bold is not that bad.

Wow, my N1 on EDGE just beat the Storm on Wifi. I loaded up that website at the same time as the Storm and it wasn't even close.
