AT&T Galaxy SIII 4.3 Update Likes/Issues

I hate the updated Google Maps in 4.3 and want to revert back to Android 4.1.1 on my AT&T GS3 so I can use the older maps. Would I run into problems just flashing a custom 4.1.1 rom now that my GS3 has 4.3 on it? Would there be issues with 4.3 bootloader and radio?

Do not do this! I have read many posts from people who bricked their S3's by trying to flash the old ROM back onto it after having the 4.3 upgrade applied. Evidently the bootloaders are incompatible and you can mess yourself up by trying to just flash the older ROM. Google it and you'll see what I mean.

Instead, look on xda-developers.com for a recent post about an app that let's you have both the new and older versions of Google Maps. I will go find you a link real quick and add it here in a minute..

Thanks for the heads up. Thanks for the maps app, too.

I'm going to shelve my GS3 because of the 4.3 update. I've tried every way to root it so I can install some other rom and have had nothing but failure. I was able to successfully install a custom recovery, but It won't flash custom roms. It won't root, it won't flash SU. And the one time the root kit did install an SU app, the security system in 4.3 (Knox) refuses to allow it to function. And updating the SU in the Play Store doesn't help. It comes back saying there are no SU binaries. I can't install them either - tried and tried and tried.

My GS3 is basically worthless now because of 4.3. Thankfully I have an older - much slower, though - device.

By the way, the older GM app won't login and won't seem to gain a network connection.

That is a dang shame! I was able to root the 4.3 ROM using the CF-Autoroot script. No issues..

Well, technically I did have issues, but that was cause I bricked myself by using Autoroot without unencrypting my device first. But once I got out of the boot loop by flashing the 4.3 image onto it again, the CF-Autoroot worked as expected on the fresh 4.3 install. SuperSU noticed Knox and offered to disable it, etc..

Sorry it didn't work for you! Once I had a rooted, fresh 4.3 I was able to remove Knox and all the AT&T crapware, add the tethering mod, and it has been working like a dream ever since. Much better performance than I'd ever seen out of this phone. Removing the crapware made a HUGE difference!

I'm thinking I'm going to have to try CF-Autoroot. Do you have any helpful links you might suggest?

Can you list the apps you deleted?

Sadly, I didn't keep track.. I just went and found someone else's list via Google and started deleting stuff..

Sorry!

Hi, Not strictly an AT&T S3, using an international/unbranded phone on T-mobile in the UK but you guys seem to be the ones with the knowledge about the new upgrade.

Cos of my work I often need to put my phone into total silence mode, like it just cannot make a noise or else. (Silent mode will not do.) I used to use a button on my home which was essentially a widget for the option in accessibility>turn off all sounds>tick. This was really handy. (It was the same as the assistive light button/widget which is also really helpful to stick on a home screen)

Upgraded to the new firmware/whatever and the button has just disappeared. Assistive light is still there. But Turn off Sounds is not in the widgets menu. Although the option is still in settings, but this is too long winded to go through everytime. (takes about 5 secs instead of 1...)

Just wondering if anyone knows why this has gone, how I could get it back or if theres a good alternative out there?

thanks.

Not long after I wrote about having to shelve my GS3, I came across a more reliable root method and succeeded in rooting it and flashing CM10.2. This allowed me to install the older maps app I have saved.

Because of the hassle of Knox, this hardware will never see another Samsung ROM.

Someone may have a free app for that. Try searching the play store.

Another issue I've noticed since the 4.3 update is my Plantronics Voyager Bluetooth earpiece has nowhere near the range it used to have and my phone will not connect via Bluetooth to my Win7 computer. The computer diagnosis states a "Bluetooth Peripheral Driver" is missing and it can't locate it online to download. Samsung tech support said they don't provide Bluetooth drivers so I'll have to revisit the issue with Dell tech support. Overall I'm disappointed with 4.3 as I think the disadvantages including increased battery drain outweigh anything I've used so far that's different from 4.1. I particularly miss the Weather Channel app not displaying the temperature in the status bar anymore. I think 4.3 is somewhat of a half baked OS courtesy of AT&T and it sure isn't like they didn't have enough time to get it right. If I had a choice I switch back to 4.1.

Tabatha, if you look at my post here you can find a fix for the FoxFi issues. You have to root, at least temporarily, but it is well worth it to be able to have free tethering back and uninstall and the crapware the carriers install, and remove Knox as well..

Re: AT&T Galaxy S3 4.3 Update Likes/Issues

while i realize the update has been absolutely horrid to the point of me buying a new phone.... I still would like to fix mine in any attempt to try and sell it. Any help would be much appreciated . When I make phone calls it sounds as if I am a robot and no one can understand me. I have my SIM card in my new phone and it works fine, the mic is mechanically fine since under the voice recorder I can make a recording and clearly hear myself. The problem is isolated to cellular voice calls. I would assume this is software related ex. Jelly Bean 4.3... but I am not sure, I have not seen anyone else with the problem. My phone also has had a screen replacement is it possible that the heat gun fried the cell chips? Or whatever is needed to make the voice calls work? Ideas?
Thanks in advance

Re: AT&T Galaxy S3 4.3 Update Likes/Issues

Panicked when I saw the update coming last week, but aside from a few common issues (flash notification, changed alert tones) it hasn't been too bad. The only thing I can't figure out is when I put the phone in the dock, the docking sound used to be the same volume as all the other alerts. Now it's extremely loud. Any idea how to change it?

Re: AT&T Galaxy S3 4.3 Update Likes/Issues

What is the fix for the constant download notifications? I see it on here but dont understand what it means.

In you app drawer. The one you tap on to see all of your apps. The download folder has a green arrow pointing down

Re: AT&T Galaxy S3 4.3 Update Likes/Issues

Has anyone figured out hot to change the text notification sound. Mine is apparently stuck for some reason and will not accept any of the changes I make.

I noticed that the text notification sounds went back to a default and the downloaded sounds I had were not found in the list. I use Zedge to download ringtones and notification sounds. I went into Zedge and went to my downloads, notifications, then clicked on the sounds and set them to where I wanted them. They then showed up in the list.

Clearing the download lists in the download app worked beautifully (had to clear two lists). Thanks so much for posting! This bug was driving me crazy.
