According to the Engadget, At&t version of HTC One will not be able get it's boot loader unlocked once it sees the official release(presumably April 19th). Although it was reported some users who had early access to the HTC One, it was affirmed by HTC to the Engadget.com that the AT&T version of HTC ONE will not be supported by the HTCdev unlock service. It may be blocked once it's released officially.:-[

Exactly what they did with the one x. Complete garbage. Another reason I'm going with Samsung this time.

It's lot to do with stupid AT&T than with the HTC, they(htc) are in no position as Samsung to force AT&T to oblige to their ideas. I think they have already so much that they were able to convince different carriers to stick to the basic(international) design of HTC One.

Half of the devs gave up on Samsung devices due to lack of support from Samsung..

Not saying they won't be roms but i guess devs will fully support the Snapdragon version

As you can see this is why users had concerns regarding the att version and my subsequent thread showing that unlock was now possible. We weren't just making this stuff up lol.

But won't the unlocked developer edition work on ATT at full speed? Why not go that route?

Because you have to pay full price for those. Most people are using upgrades to pay 200-300.

Having said that, I'm sure some users will try to flip their att device to an unlocked or dev model. But right now that could be risky given the state of those devices with letstalk and possible delays.

That wouldn't be a terrible idea

Agreed, but wouldn't you say that the folks who really need to have an unlocked device are fine getting it at full price? I mean, I don't think that a carrier subsidy is at the top of their requirement list.

Sure that's the case with some but I personally wouldn't make the assumption that a person that likes to tinker with their device most like always pays full retail. Not sure there's a direct correlation there. And I can't say that because I like tinkering with mine and I've been on contract with a carrier for the last 7 years. And sometimes, yes I would buy full retail but I also used an upgrade when it was available. So I'd get the device cheaper if I could. But of course, to your point everyone isn't like that but i wouldn't think everyone is either.

Yeah its not. Its just a matter of timing. For instance, how long would it take to sell the att device or does the person have the money to front their purchase until they sell the att one. Then how soon can you get the developer model. Pretty much have to do this without cracking open that att model without taking a small loss on the resale. Personally, I would get the att one on contract and buy the developer model as well. And then sell my att if I couldn't afford to pay straight up for the developer one. We all have different financial situations. I have 3 on preorder so this wouldn't be an issue for me lol.

My phone has basically been paid for already about 3 weeks ago.. I sold my lumia 920 3 weeks ago because I had an offer I didn't wanna pass up.. not knowing at the time a firm release date on the One but knowing it was close. Then boughta full price Blackberry Z10 from best buy... used that for 2 weeks and last Friday I returned it and picked up an HTC One from ATT full price to hold me over until my dev unlocked One ships to me. One one hand it's nice getting to try other phones virtually free of charge and "rent" them. On the other it is stressful because I know if I scratch one of these or something I'm stuck with it for a while.

"Half" is mighty exaggerated and I think that whole thing more to do with Samsung being stingy with the Exynos codecs. Those that have the octa core just won't get any support, the Snapdragon will be supported fine.

Anyway, this must've been what that person who said the AT&T bootloader wasn't going to be unlockable meant. It really looks like AT&T doesn't want you doing anything to their phones.

As a disclaimer by the way, this is will only be for the AT&T phones. It's been said you can unlock T-Mobile's version fine, I haven't heard any word on Sprint.

If I remember correctly, the sprint version can be unlocked just fine as well.

I know it is more of atts fault but the point is it was still annoying. I know the Samsung snapdragon version will be supported just fine.

As a previous iphone owner, I am slightly confused about the terms, is the boot loader the same as rooting the phone? Cuz I was thinking of rooting the HTC One to get rid of all the ATT bloatware, according to the Verge, they can be pretty annoying...

Unlocking the bootloader should allow you to root the phone. However, all of the other carriers besides ATT will be able to unlock their bootloader at htcdev without problems. Unlocking those phones will void the warranty.

Ah. See, I'm already used to the new T-Mobile plans, where one basically buys the phone either outright or by the month... I guess their marketing strategy is working.

No.. there's a good chance someone will come up with a root method that doesn't require the bootloader being unlocked. It's just that with an unlocked bootloader you can flash a pre-rooted rom, taking most of the work out of finding a root method. I could be wrong but that's my understanding. Totally doable though to have root with a locked bootloader.
