AT&T LG G2: excessive battery drain

Re: at&t only battery drain?

So I got ATT to send me a new device in the hopes that I had a defective one. I received said device the other day and after 3 days of typical use it's arguably WORSE on battery life than my original device that prompted me to start this thread. I have posted some battery life screen shots.

I'm not really sure what to do now. Some of you in this thread are experiencing the same thing, others appear to be getting the same awesome battery life that all the reviewers and many others are overjoyed about. Sooo, what's my next move? Rooting and flashing a custom ROM? Trying to root and get rid of carrier ID? If that is the problem, why isn't everyone with an att device getting hit? Ugh.

I'm not familiar with GSam software, but in the picture it shows your phone on for ~11 hours and it was "held awake" for ~10. If that means what I think it means, your phone is not going into deep sleep when it's idle. That usually means you have a wake lock keeping the phone awake. I suggest you go to xda forums and grab Better Battery Stats and track down the wake lock.

Good luck.

Thanks for the tip. Just grabbed that app and will track it over the course of the day. Which category should I be paying closer attention to: partial wakelocks or kernel wakelocks? Or both?. Ill post screen shots at some point when i have a decent time/point of reference.

You'll want to look at both categories, although my bet is your problem is going to be in the partial wakelock category. Partial wakelocks are not, by nature, bad. In fact, they're necessary. They're what keeps our phones from dropping into deep sleep when the screen is off while on a call or listening to music, for example. However, some Apps and/or processes can hold these wakelocks too long, or sometimes in perpetuity. This is what you want to be looking for.

Also, you may also want to install the App Wakelock Detector, for another reporting tool that may help you drill down into the problem.

I usually look at Partial Wakelocks the most. But really you should be looking at Partial, Kenel and it's helpful to look at CPU (to know if your phone has been in deep sleep or not).

Re: at&t only battery drain?

Ok so I'm new to Android... I have found that carrier IQ is wake locking about 29 minutes total after about 6.5 hours of time unplugged, so as far as Carrier IQ,if I go into apps , then all, I can't find a listing for it. Can someone help me with finding it. I'm on AT&T if that makes a difference. Thanks

Carrier IQ runs in the background. It's not an app you can uninstall conventionally like you would for other apps. Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but i think you'd need root to disable/remove carrier IQ. And if you're new to android, I might not recommend going down the root path yet.

Settings->general->apps->running
Look for Android System. Click it and you should see carrier IQ and can stop it. After i stop it I also stop Android System. But you may want to see if just stopping carrier IQ helps.

I too am having a significant battery drain issue. I am on my second G2 after both the sales reps and independent tech service attempted to diagnose the phone. No one could figure out what is causing the issue. Furthermore both devices have/are experiencing WiFi issues. The WiFi issue is the phone cannot obtain a higher download speed of 4-5Mbps, but upload speed isn't affected. Additionally the WiFi icon in the notification bar is constantly showing the "up arrow" and "down arrow" always on, indicating that the phone is in a constant state of upload and download. I've tried numerous factory resets and have disabled numerous apps and services. No luck. When the screen is on I'm looking about 1% every minute. When the screen is off I'm experiencing 15-20% drain per hour. The service tech did state it wasn't a hardware issue but a software issue. He went on to state I could attempt another exchange or wait for a patch.

Does anyone believe this is an LG Software issue and the Nexus 5 most likely will be plagued by this or is this just an ATT software issue.

Hard to say for sure but I would be inclined to say its an att issue.

Best we can do is be diligent in documenting wakelocks so that maybe att will issue fixes in a future update.
I would say that at the very least we should pressure them to remove Cartier IQ as that has all but been confirmed to leach a lot of battery.

If you don't have root, does the carrier IQ process come back on eventually/after you reboot your phone? I had thought it does.

Yes, it comes back. Obviously rooting would be best, however, for those who don't yet want to root, this is a pretty good 'solution'.

Re: at&t only battery drain?

On a reboot, yes it does.

I'll have to see how much this helps. At the advisory of others in this thread I started monitoring my wakelocks and what was causing them. The first major culprit was google backup. I disabled that and saw a decent battery improvement. It's still not where I think it should be based on what I'm seeing from other people with the phone so we'll see if this brings it that extra bit.

Re: at&t only battery drain?

i too disabled the carrier iq and i get amazing battery life. not sure what caused my battery to drain 40% the other night while i was sleeping but a reboot and disabling the carrier iq "fixed" the issue...

this is most definitely a firmware issue that att/lg needs to hop on and fix via an update.

That is because of carrier IQ which turns on your GPS even its off and keeps searching causes battery drain heavily. As a solution either you keep your location on (WiFi) or kill the carrier iq.

Re: at&t only battery drain?

One thing I have noticed is when you turn off the auto sync then it gives you really good battery life ( all night drops ~1 or 2 %). Not sure what is culprits here for auto sync, since I have two email a/c and other google backup and contact sync. I have used iPhone4s and idle time battery performance is really good with auto sync on.

Re: at&t only battery drain?

I disable Carrier IQ every time I restart my phone and it gives me the excellent battery life advertised for this phone. It is a bit frustrating and may require me to root the phone to remove it.
I work in a high-rise office building and Carrier IQ would spend all day turning on GPS trying to find a signal, turn it off and I think a lot of your battery issues will be solved!

I see the same thing... But you can't live without autosync can you?

Re: at&t only battery drain?

I always want auto sync. But one thing I do is turn off auto sync during night using profile setup.

Re: at&t only battery drain?

I'm experiencing the same problem. Very frustrating.
