AT&T LG G2: excessive battery drain

Re: at&t only battery drain?

I just got my wife the white version Friday and when I got home I charged it to 100 percent and with in thirty minutes of her using it, the battery dropped to 69%. I told my self that maybe it needed a good week of normal charges until I came across this thread. Yesterday I turned off the carrier IQ and that seemed to help. I put a lot of time on her phone, videos, music etc, and then she took it to work. We got 20 total hours after that carrier IQ was turned off, however today the battery has drained twenty percent in one hour after idling. I very disappointed because I got this phone for her and boasted how great the battery life would be for her compared to her old phone.

Re: at&t only battery drain?

Hmmmm...I haven't had horrible battery life, but it isn't great. Some days it's better than others, but I think it may be the operating system (could be wrong). I say this, because my data usage has tripled since moving to android. I don't do anything crazy, just normal usage: email sync every 2 hours, GPS & Google services on only when needed, wifi & Bluetooth only when needed, and Google backup is disabled. On many days I can make on a single battery charge, but not always...screen (auto at 62%) and android services seem to battle for top battery hog. Disabling carrier IQ will keep the GPS from randomly turning on. Anyways, battery not impressive and not horrible 😁

Re: at&t only battery drain?

2 week old AT&T LG G2: I have had zero issues with battery life - I spend most of my day with a AT&T LTE signal and at home on AT&T 4G or WiFi.
I am by no means a heavy user, but find that my G2 gets me thru the day with plenty to spare

Re: at&t only battery drain?

This past weekend I knew I'd be busy, so I'd have a light phone usage weekend. I decided to see how well the battery does when I don't use the phone much. I charged up on Friday and made sure CarrierIQ service was stopped. In the background I had Exchange server pushing work emails, Gmail pushing, K9 polling every 30 min and Google Now running (I like to have it running, so I'll take the battery hit that comes with it).
If I can do this correctly, following will be a couple of screenshots showing that I had under 3 hours of screen time and 50 hours on the battery and still had 37% battery remaining. I could eke out more, but I'm quite pleased with this. I know, this doesn't tell the whole story. It says nothing about how long I could actually "use" the phone. That's not what this was meant to do. Idle usage is important to me because if I set my phone down and it's at 70%, i don't want to come back two hours later and not be able to make a call because my battery drained. On screen time is important too, and I've gotten some pretty good numbers there (though no pics) as well. So overall, if I kill CarrierIQ, I'm very happy with this phone's battery performance.

Re: at&t only battery drain?

Turning off Carrier IQ made a world of difference. It wasn't horrible before, just not great, now I'm getting the kind of battery life the reviewers talked about.

Re: at&t only battery drain?

Must be rooted and use system tuner to disable carrier iq which I think is 7apps

Re: at&t only battery drain?

I'm on an At&T LG G2 for the last 4 days. disabled carrierIQ and i'm not impressed with battery life. i go from 7am and i'm starting to worry about running out around 7pm. I'm coming from an iphone5 which lasted ALL day long. ugh... i'm pretty sure i'm trading in for the moto x. The LG is too big for my hands and i'm used to one-handed operation. The battery life was something i was looking forward to in the LG, but it really hasn't come close to impressing me so far.

The moto x is a really nice phone. It was my second choice if the G2 didn't work for me.

As for battery life, can you post more info? What's your screen time, etc?

Re: at&t only battery drain?

Ok, I think im closing in on what's going on with the battery life on my phone. I've been using Better Battery Stats to check on what kinda wakelocks are going on. I have found two so far that are wakelocking my device almost constantly.

They are both "Kernel Wakelocks" named bam_dmux_wakelock and PowerManagerService. I did some digging and found that the bam_dmux one has something to do with background data usage. I looked in my data usage and found that by far the worst offender is actually Android OS and everything it is using it is doing in the background. This is especially surprising considering i do a fair amount of streaming music and podcasts.

I'm not sure what to do next. I have, and have had, google backup turned off. I have never encountered a scenario where Android OS is taking up 95%+ of my data usage (and incurring a ton of wakelocks as well apparently). I have attached copious screenshots from today, which was a typical day in terms of both usage and battery life. Also of not, i have disable carrier IQ.

Re: at&t only battery drain?

i just got the G2 yesterday and am having the same issue. when the wifi is connected the battery will drop dramatically 10% within half an hour. the wifi is constantly exchanging/transferring data as the symbol stays active. Also the phone gets really warm in my pocket. i don't know what information is being transferred or i don't know how to stop it. i know i'm late to the forum but just adding my two cents and seeing if it's been rectified.

Re: at&t only battery drain?

So guys, I had same problem on mine LG G2. I was using internet from provider and batery was draining 10 percent per hour. I tried to fix it so i installed advanced task killer for killing applications, but most important thing was to install 2G to 3G switcher for the network from provider. I had a problem with switchning between GSM and WCDMA. When the telephone couldnt reach 3G signal-WCDMA, telephone was trying to find it. So i swithced it only to 2G when I dont need fast internet and voila... Yesterday only 15 percent per 10 hours all day conected to data from mobile provider... standard use.
So few tips:
- kill all apps with task killer before you go for sleep
- switch every time when you dont need fast internet to GSM-2G
- if you still have fast batery drain its other thing :D
Hopefully helps it could work for every cellphone. Have fun

Re: at&t only battery drain?

I guess I must be doing something wrong because since I've had my AT&T LG2 since September, am getting fantastic battery life. Am not a super heavy user, just average but I do have syncing turned off & only sync when I need to. I just love this phone to pieces & still have the LG Optimus G as a back up. Both of these phones are great. Love the button on the back feature since the buttons on the side always got mashed when I handled the phone. Love the knock-on - knock-off feature & just am pleased as punch with this phone & that includes the battery life. Did I mention how much I love this phone? I do & receive texting with & without pictures, make & receive phone calls, take vids, love to change wallpapers often, send e-mail with/without pics, use google search for places when driving, etc. etc. etc. You get the idea. :-) Have it linked with my car so I can control some of the car functions when not in the car & also use hands-free calling.

Have done various tests on this phone just to see how long this phone could last with minimal use & got tired & bored with doing that after the phone actually lasted me 5 days plus. Am perfectly happy to plug it in every few days for a charge & it works just fine for me. As I stated, however, am not a power user so I do realize that experiences with battery life will be different for those people. Just wanted to give my 2 cents. :-)

........and.......just a bit of info ....... am a 66 year old gal who loves tech gadgets & am not living in the stone age ..... LOL :-)

Re: at&t only battery drain?

I was having the same problems. I actually went in and got a replacement device. The first day on the second device was having the same battery drain problems. So I turned off WiFi (already had GPS, notifications, sync, etc off) and drained the battery completely. After a full charge with the power off, I unplugged in on Monday morning, and it lasted me until Tuesday night. I ran it dry a second time and recharged it again while off on Tuesday night. I unplugged it Wednesday morning, and as of now (8:15 on Friday morning) I'm at 47% and it is telling me I can expect about 88 hours of use left (obviously that will change when I start using it today). But, point it, I'll be able to go close to 3 full days on a charge. I've done nothing to my phone other than turn WiFi off. I'm what I would consider a light to moderate user. No streaming, no constant checking of twitter, emails, etc. But a few phone calls a day, number of texts, some checking of email, scores, etc.

Yeah, it's odd. This is the first phone I have had where WiFi is LESS efficient than LTE/HSPA+. If I leave Wifi on, I get a nice steady drain. I have compared BBS stats from when on WiFi and when on LTE and there's absolutely nothing that stands out as being the culprit (ie: wakelocks, etc). The WiFi module is just a battery suck.

Yeah I don't know what it is. I was on WiFi on my iPhone whenever possible and there was no difference in battery whether on or off WiFi. I do have a data limit, so I just have to be aware of it. I never came close on my iPhone, but I was on wifi most of the time.

Re: at&t only battery drain?

I have noticed similar findings.
- At work (no wifi connectivity, connection bounces between 4G and 4G LTE) just on average usage I go through maybe 3 - 5% battery an hour (check emails, Facebook, Fantasy Football, etc.)
- At home on wifi with the same above usage, I can burn through 10 - 15% battery an hour

I use Juice Defender Ultimate, Smart Wifi Toggler, keep my screen at 50% brightness, have GPS and bluetooth off, and have recently started killing Carrier IQ.

I worked from home today and disabled wifi as a test. I have been on battery for 8 hours and 34 minutes and I have used 15% of my battery with 32 hours and 36 minutes projected use time.

Looks like I will just continue following this thread and will only use wifi at home if I am streaming music/videos or updating/downloading apps.

I hope someone figures out something soon. Other than this I love my G2. I came from Apple and not planning on going back.

FYI, I seriously doubt that Juice Defender does anything to help this phone, except turn data off. The app has not been updated in two years. It probably drains the battery more than it helps.

Cool ... thanks for the info. Maybe I will try a different app. I'll try to scan through the forums for alternatives. I think I tried DU Battery Saver and it did not seem to help, but maybe it was just the wifi that was sucking all the power anyway.

The best battery saver app is NONE of them. They are absolutely unnecessary on these phones and all of these types of apps will use more battery than they save (or just "dumb down" your high end "smart phone").

Re: at&t only battery drain?

I believe I have a similar problem... but im t-mobile. Can anyone help me?
I turned off
-carrier IQ,
-disabled unused apps,
-sync turned off,
-apps are in manual sync,
-location services off
-battery saver mode 90% of the time
-brightness usually under 35%
- I use fastreboot before i turn off screen.

as of now, I am very disappointed in the battery life of this phone.. which was one of the main reason I got it. I came from a HTC one S which had 1650mah battery..
I am a average user, but I am forced to use it light-average and still i cant make it through the day.

anyone see this odd too?

EDIT:
