AT&T M8 Software update Downloading NOW!!!

You must have opted into the HTC cloud storage option. I said no to that (my wife is always accidentally taking pictures or playing around). You may want to look at backing out of that option if you don't want it.
You should not be getting any compatibility messages for the AT&T software. Perform a restart and if it persists, take it into a store or call AT&T support.

I don't recall opting into the htc cloud storage and tend to avoid using those kind of preinstalled things but I will definitely look and see if I somehow did manage to do without knowing it. The compatibility problems are not with the at&t apps they put on, two are HTC's (HTC Connect, HTC tasks), and one is a sort of Microsoft office style app called Polaris Office 5. Those all say they are not compatible with the phone and don't even offer the option in the my app's part of the play store to update them and no way to disable in the app manager part of the phone. A support guy from at&t suggested a factory reset as a possible solution but they were not usable prior to the update to lolipop anyway so, it's worth a try but not thinking it will help.

I am looking through the phone now and do not see an HTC cloud app or anything so where would I find that feature to look if I did accidentally opt in? Thanks for all the other info by the way it is much appreciated.

How is the gps issue for everybody? On Saturday my battery was draining big time.

I have seen a lot of posts on that problem but I have not noticed if mine is going on or off. Is that in the location settings? If so I do not have mine on and have not seen it come on at all. My battery since the update has not really been a problem. Maybe a very slight increase but nothing I would worry about. My issues have mainly been app and new feature related which are minor. Sorry to hear so many are having the issue you are and will keep an eye out to see if it starts up on mine.

I found the HTC cloud feature and I am not signed up from what it looks like. I am just wondering why, even if I had opted for it, that it is asking for and then not accepting an email address to begin with instead of just making it an attachment like I thought it used to. Since the phone is new and not much is on it yet I may just do the reset and see what happens. Thanks again.

Here's a quick thing to try for anyone having issues with location services draining battery:

1. From the Play Store, find an app called AppOps (there's a few with the same name, but it should be the first one - it has an icon similar to the Settings gear icon)
2. In AppOps, you can choose which apps can use which features of your phone, including location - and it lists which apps are requesting the location service.
3. Disable Location Services for whichever app is requesting the location services the most often. It lists the apps by battery drain to make it easier to find which app is using the service and draining the battery the most.

It's not a great fix, but it should cut down the battery drain some apps cause by using location so frequently. Hope this helps! If someone finds which app it is, rooted users can uninstall it or disable it, assuming it won't cause issues (I'd just disable location if it's a system app and not uninstall as it may cause problems).

Well my battery life is excellent now after disabling a lot of bloat and a factory reset.

One item in particular is the dot view which was consuming almost 40% of the battery usage. If you aren't using a dot view case try disabling it in the settings and see if it helps.

I've disabled Facebook and Twitter and most att apps and lock screen notifications as well and use the power saver feature.

4.5 hours screen time and 2 days before it's dead isn't bad and is much better than I had before on kitkatt.

I haven't updated to lollipop because everyone is saying it didn't fix the problem. I have just about everything disabled in AppOps when it comes to location and still GPS keeps eating my battery. I'm considering rooting.

Does it at least list what apps are using it? If you can narrow it down, at least we'll know which app is the culprit and we can hopefully determine if uninstalling the app (via root) would be a working solution.

Here are the apps that trigger GPS: Android System and IQ Agent Service

Looks like that IQ Agent Service may be the culprit. Can you disable it entirely, or at least disable the location service for it in AppOps?

I found this thread searching for IQ Agent Service:

I read the forum and you would think AT&T would notice what the people are saying about what they are doing is illegal and try to fix it. It is odd how my phone works. While I am at work, the GPS or carrier iq is going the entire time. While I am at home, it is not. On Saturday, I was out of town, battery drain the entire time I was out. I went to my in laws the next town over. No drain.
I am ready to do two things: all my brother about case law on the issue and/or switch to T-Mobile. They will buy my phone at no cost to me and I can get a phone that won't have the drain.

I was considering switching to Tmobile, but I think I'll just root the phone instead, wait until my contract expires and switch to Verizon.

As a Verizon customer, I can say that while the VZW service is second to none (in my area, which is the Philadelphia, PA region), their customer service is not much better than AT&T. I personally don't trust carrier updates anymore, so I run a custom ROM and I'm unlocked and S-OFF - my phone is mine. I understand that is not possible or desirable for everyone, as many people simply want a device to work and nothing more.

As for the legality of tracking software on the phone...it depends on how the data is used. It could simply be a bug with a carrier app, or it could be a location monitoring service used by the carrier for some reason (tracking movement of their customers is one way to find gaps in their coverage, for example) - but not telling customers that they're being tracked and then denying it does not exactly inspire confidence. If possibly, I recommend rooting the phone and simply removing this app, if the location services cannot be turned off in AppOps.

But first, can anyone confirm if disabling the location services for Carrier IQ in AppOps solves the problem?

unfortunately, it does not :/

:( Dang, I was hoping it would.

Well, if rooting or installing a custom ROM is possible for you AT&T folks, I recommend that.

If not, call AT&T and complain. Mentioning the word "attorney" tends to get their attention, from my experience.

Battery issues!! After the install my battery now dies completely every day unless I keep it on the charger. ERRRRR:mad:

I was looking around for rooting instructions and found several, but there is always a link to some software that is dead. Anyone knows where I can look to find a complete set of instruction with software? Thanks in advance.

unfortunately, HTC nor at&t care enough to fix this iq carrier trainwreck- such a shame

Has anyone reached out to the AT&T customer service and demanded a fix for this? There is no acceptable reason they can give for not fixing this immediately, even if it's just an update that removes the app.

Just had an idea that has probably been tried but has anyone simply disabled the app via app manager in Settings? Force stop and then disable.

Also, for those who can, I recommend simply rooting the phone and removing the app entirely.
