ATT Galaxy S3 is getting the 4.1.2 update today

Ahhh the joys of being rooted... Just downloaded the update manually and then easily uninstalled all the bloatware. So much better then dealing with AT&T's crap.

So after downloading the firmware update for 4.1.2 does it automatically apply the update or give you an option to do it when you decide to? The reason why I ask is I was thinking about doing a factory reset before the update and after to start fresh. But, I don't want to do this until I know I can run the update right after the reset.

I almost feel like it does give you an option to reset and apply. I personally have favored factory resetting after applying updates though and can't really remember.

I didn't even bother with this update. Imo the changes after the update aren't drastic enough to warrant completely setting up everything again.

OK so since applying the update my phone no longer shows LTE just 4G. Anyone else having this issue? I did a speed test and it was slower than my crap Verizon DSL. Anyone know what I should do about this? Other than phone ATT?

@fotyc - After you downloaded the update did it automatically apply or did you have the option to do it later?

I had the option to do it later. But having taken a million years to download I didn't want to take the slightest chance that I'd lose what I'd downloaded!

I hear that! Lol. I tried on a friend's wifi and had to manipulate the date on my phone, only to end up having to do it again when we visited a friend in the hospital. All the while I couldn't see download percentage for the update. (Possibly because I'm using a different launche). The only way I could sort of tell it was going was by viewing my Data Usage on WIFI and watching "Android OS". Then I turned WIFI Power Saving off, the update stopped and once I got it to start it moved quicker than before. Then once it was done, I think I had to force it to go again.

It made updating via Kies seem like a piece of cake!

Hey guys, I am in Memphis, and I still haven't gotten an update notification, and I have also tried to check for a software update multiple times today, with no luck. My phone is rooted, if that makes any difference. Any idea as to why it is telling me no software update is available? I am checking on wifi too.

So I tried to update my s3 today and it seemed like it started to do it then it force closed. Now it says I can't check for an update for 24 hours. Anyone help? Wanna see what the update is all about. And don't even talk to me about kies haha.

Appears you have two choices: 1. Wait 24 hours and try again, or 2. Do the advance date trick and manual advance your date forward 24 hrs. (be careful though because if it force closes again you may end up having to wait longer.) I read a lot of folks had success doing the time trick but a few others now have months to wait. A factory reset reportedly resolves that issue but it has its own issues. Good luck.

Don't sweat it. I'm sure it'll show up soon enough on sammobile and then you can DL it and flash it with ODIN. I always feel safer doing it that way anyways. That way I can back up all my stuff do a full wipe and load it fresh.

so it probably wouldnt be worth doing a factory reset and trying it again?

I think it did that to me at first and then I just pushed it forward again and tried. I'm extremely persistent in these situations though lol.

I've got 238 hours til I can check for the next update, but so what? 4.2 probably won't get to ATT GS3s until some time next summer.

Well in my case I started the download but then I decided I didn't want to apply it because right now I'm rooted without tripping the flash counter and I didn't want to lose root. Since I couldn't stop the update manually I froze the ATT software process with TiBu to stop it from finishing.

Then my sd card failed so I decided to go ahead and do a full wipe, reset and odin back my rooted version of stock 4.1 .1. That was yesyerday and so far I haven't gotten the notification on the software update. So who knows?

So if my countdown timer thing is set for like 200+ hours from now, will that mean that I won't get the notification from my phone saying I should update until the timer is done? Because notifications should start rolling out tomorrow

I still haven't been able to get it WTF

The best way to avoid problems is to always reboot your phone before checking for update, that way, if it finds an update, there will be fewer chances for things to break during the update process. Mine went through flawlessly as a result. And yes, 4.1.2 does fix a number of issues, seems to be a bit better for phone "responsiveness", and the multi-window may come in handy, even though I don't see myself needing or using it all that often.
