I've had my stylo 2 for 4 months and today the audio for the speaker has been giving off a poor quality, crackling at times and kinda fading noises together, there was no opportunity for water damage so is this looking like a hardware problem? I'd hate to repeat the insurance claim process again just because of a failing speaker

Welcome to Android Central! If the sound is normal through wired or Bluetooth headsets, then your speaker is probably faulty. It should be covered by warranty -- contact LG to start the process. Insurance is different -- you pay for insurance, and typically have to pay a deductible of around $100 to get a replacement. Insurance covers damage that you cause, or other issues after the warranty expires. The warranty covers defects, and they should take care of it for free.
