Audio Quality

Let's put it truthfully, the audio quality totally SUCKS. All this money for what, no expantion, no waterproofing, no ois, horrible sound. I'm very happy I kept my S7 edge and axon 7. Pixel going back. If you're an audiophile, nothing beats the axon7.

Ugh, I was just about to return the axon 7 (amazing phone, but mine has terrible signal quality) in favor of the pixel, but this comment makes me really hesitant. I went from a 5x to an axon 7 and it was so glorious. If the pixel is as bad as the 5x in the audio department, I won't be able to deal.

Try for yourself. His comment isn't accurate, I think the audio quality is excellent. He posts in almost every thread saying how much he dislikes everything about the Pixel. I had the Note 7 and the audio quality is just as good if not better in my opinion.

It simply can not be as bad as the 5x. The 5x DAC was running off the 808 processor, which was bad to quite terrible. The Pixel is off the 821, which is of higher quality.

A month ago or so I went to the theater to see Magnificent Seven and there was a really nice advertisement for the Axon 7 before the previews began. Sound quality was definitely advertised. It really is a nice device but its a fat one. I think it felt a lot like the Moto x Pure in hand, which was ok but still too chubby for me.

Good to know they are promoting it! I think its a lovely device. I don't mind if a device is a little chubby. For example the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active. as long as the body is robust and does not require a case :)

This confirms what I have been saying about the audio quality. He said it was one of the worst. That conforms with my observations. I am really sad about this. I like most everything else about the phone. BTW, the audio volume on phone calls is the worst I have ever seen. I have it all the way to max, and it is barely usable in a quiet environment. Out on a loud street corner - forget it. I knew when they didn't mention audio quality in the original presentation that it would suck. Why couldn't they just let HTC design it. What a missed opportunity...

I have no issues with call quality and my volume is around 55-65% only, if I max it out then other people next to me can hear my conversation. I also have a pair 2 beats audio headset the one that covers your year and a pair of small beats audio ear buds and it sounds amazing. I actually still have my nexus 6p and when I tested listening to music from the Google Play store, same track on both phones with the head phones it sounded the same I couldn't really tell which was better to be honest.

I would check to see if maybe you have a defective device, bc you should be able to listen to your voice calls with the volume all the way up especially in quiet environments. I don't experience the same as you mentioned.

What carrier are you on? Audio streaming services, except for Tidal, all have crap quality and are not a good test. You need to use a known high quality audio file locally on the device with a good music player.

Well to be fair, it really depends which audio output you're talking about.

Audio from the 3.5mm headphone jack uses a different DAC/amplifier setup than the audio coming out of the earpiece, which in turn uses a different setup from the audio coming out of the bottom speaker (they might share the same DAC but they certainly have different amplifiers).

Phone internals have no impact on streaming quality (assuming a decent connection of course); that all depends on the device that is actually playing the music.

So if the chief complaint is low volume during phone calls it would seem that the Pixel just happens to have a very weak gain on the earpiece.

VOIP calls on the earpiece sound loud enough.

Wow
I'm glad I seen this post.
Was considering getting rid of my Note 5 for a Pixel XL.
But one thing I have a big problem with is I'm hard of hearing.
Audiologists has me at 70% deaf.

Why do people that mfg things not look at this.
Are they all young ?
Or don't think about it.

I'm sorry to read about your hearing loss because I'm an audiophile (but not the snobby kind).

I am a former N5/N7 owner, and I can tell you that the move to Pixel is a substantial upgrade on many fronts. As a former working musician, I have hearing loss as well. Think Marshall stacks and Stratocasters - for years. It's a wonderful thing, but not so good for my hearing. My level of loss is not as great as yours however. Sorry to hear about that.

That said, I find call volume on my Pixel XL to be easily equal to the N5/N7. If anyone has an issue b/c of variables such as location, ambient sound levels, etc., there are a number of highly-rated volume boosting apps.

So, if there are Pixel features you want to experience, like the amazing camera, Google Assistant, immediate updates, whatever, I wouldn't hold back.

I have tried several volume boosting apps over the years, and one just recently on my Pixel. None of them worked even a little. I think they are all scams.

I think the thread on XDA is going to be promising. He's even changed the voltage out on the headphone jack to match the HTC 10. He said it's the same exact hardware.

He's even trying to replicate the two speaker tweeter/mid combo. So far he has some success. I don't think the quality is as bad as some believe. He was able to establish stereo out by using the ear piece but he has to level match the down firing speaker and said it limited overall volume.

Side note... I've lost 10 decibels of hearing sensitivity and I max the call volume. It's definitely louder than my droid turbo and I'm not shoving it against my head in loud area.

What makes you say that? They have been doing better and there app is much better than what it use to be. However, if Google play had a lossless quality tier, I'd leave TIDAL in a heartbeat.

Agreed! And, to my ears the lossless aspect of Tidal does trump anything Google has with play music. I have listened back and forth countless times and can always tell when Tidal is playing. I listen to music with a lot of bass and that's exactly where Tidal beats other streaming services. With play music, the bass can sound ”crunchy” whereas Tidal will be sounding crisp and full. Also, play music often gets the midrange all wrong with bass heavy music. I've found it to be quite difficult to let Tidal go.

I will not for any reason go to Verizon with the problems I have had in the past.
And I heard. Samsung is suppose to release a phone in February.
So I am up on what to do.
I think Google rushed out this phone. And left a lot of things out of it that they could of put in at this date and time and want a Prime price for their 1st phone.

The Pixel has a great DAC, but the amplification does not match the HTC 10. However, if you listen to the 10 and the Pixel at the same SPL, you will not be able to tell them apart, especially if you're connected to Bluetooth. But, through the headphone jack, the HTC 10 shines very bright and gets about 3 steps louder than the Pixel without any distortion.

Sorry to resurrect this older thread. But I was curious if there has been any solutions to fixing the headphone audio quality on the Pixel XL? I am looking at buying one but when I tried one out in store the headphone audio quality was very poor. Can this be fixed?
