Auto Brightness NOT WORKING

So how does auto-brightness work on this phone? Does it not adjust anything until it sees what your most common level is? I don't get it. Need to know before I decide to send the phone back

supposedly, it gets to know you. it hasn't with me, but I was told by a mod that if you go outside with it on auto you get extra brightness. haven't tested, but wouldn't return my N8 for that. it has never worked on any of my notes, at least not the way I think it should.

Its not very effective with me either. It seems to work for a little bit when I restart my phone, but we should not have to do that to get it to work!

if you have it on Auto and then manually change it form the notification pull down, is it then, not on auto anymore? If I got to settings it still says its on Auto. But how?

I had the same problem (auto-brightness) and I did factory reset and even sent back to Samsung (they did another reset). But end of the day I figured out it was a VERY WEIRD situation for me - believe it or not, I am using Spigen Liquid Armor case and that is the culprit.

I remove the case and it works perfectly. I put it back on, it stops working. I tried on my friend's Note 8, exactly the same issue. It is just a rubber case - I cannot explain at all.

IF you happen to use a Spigen case - give that a try.

I hope it's not with all of the Spigen cases. I just ordered a Spigen Neo Hybrid case.

Did you go into the settings and reset the feature? It learns where you prefer it when you adjust the sliderScreenshot_20171203-080455.jpg in different environments.

Just for my phone yesterday and last night outside it seemed to stay bright but this morning it is working like it should.

Does the case cover the light sensor? I don't know where it is though?

I have a similar problem.

I read a review that mentions the phone has a 2nd Ambient Light Sensor on the back, for improved Auto Brightness settings, but a Samsung agent was telling me that it's not true.

All I know is, when my Auto Brightness is enabled, I can slide the adjustment bar all over, but the screen brightness doesn't change. It only allowed me to adjust when I disabled Auto Brightness.

However, I removed my case , and suddenly was able to adjust the brightness, with Auto Brightness still enabled. Strange, since my case is fairly unobtrusive, in regards to the screen and camera lens coverage.

In a moment, I'm going to test to see if the Auto Brightness works as it should, with the case off.

Did you even try what is in post 29 of this thread? If auto brightness doesn't seem to be working, reset that feature so it will learn your usage patterns again.

I'm also having this problem. It sometimes adjusts to be too bright or too dim. The implementation is very poor.

Simple test: open notification panel to display auto brightness bar. Cover the light sensors both sides of the earpiece with your fingers. If it auto adjust then it works.

Same issue. I think the problem comes when you a have a magnetic case (mine has two magnets to attach it to the car and it seems to be the problem).
Whenever I take it off my phone the auto brightness works just fine but when I put it back I have to switch to manual. Annoying.
