Auto download group messages.

No problem, thanks for your continued time and effort.

I sent a message to Samsung Support, let's see if they have a solution (for me having to download group messages individually).

One way or another, I need to either fine a solution with Samsung Messages downloading all group messages on its own, or I need to have Google Messages import all of my previous chats.

My last resort is moving the group chat to another messaging app. But this problem of having to download messages individually is likely to come up again, even though it's been less frequent over these years.

sorry not sure what else to suggest

So I kind of have an update on this.

First, a non-update:

I haven been chatting with Samsung support. Their initial attempts were terrible. I sent them screen shots of what was happening when I had to individually download messages. Their first suggestion was "You may have a virus."

LMAO. That's what a support suggestion is?

After that, they just checked basic settings, and have since said to try removing and adding me to the group, or calling their phone number.

Now, the update:

3 of us met in person a few days ago, so we tried some trouble shooting.

Me: On Galaxy Note 4, Android 6

Person C: On iOS 10.
Person J: On iOS 12.
Person G: On iOS 13 (I think), not present.

Person C turned off iMessages. After that, I didn't have to download messages she sent to the group.

But, for what it's worth, I watched my phone, and the message did initially appear under her individual contact in Samsung Messages, it's just that it downloaded by itself and moved to the group chat. I didn't have to manually download her message.

Person J had iMessages on, and was able to send me a group message. It went to the group (but I think similarly, it appeared under the individual contact first, before self-downloading to the group). Again, this is better than me having to manually download the message first. Person J didn't have to turn iMessages off under his message settings.

So the theory was that perhaps the newer version of iOS was doing something different. Or maybe the older version of iOS was doing something different, when iMessages were on.

I then asked Person G to turn off his iMessages and try sending a group message, but he didn't appear to want to change his setting.

BUT:

A few days later, person C (still with iMessages now turned off) sent a group message, and I had to manually download it. We were not in person anymore.

We also moved the group to WhatsApp, so that alleviated the problem.

So this may be related to newer versions of iOS, or the iMessage being turned on/off, but it's not conclusive, since the problem was only resolved for that one day, and it reappeared a few days later.

Speaking of my outdated Android version, this reminds me of one more thing.

During 2018, between June - July, give or take a few weeks, I had to manually download a lot of messages that were sent to me (these were individual messages, not group messages).

I think almost every time, that message appeared to have either an emoticon, or image attachment.

That was getting annoying.

It went away sometime after that.

So, you are probably also right, in that my Android version probably has something to do with this, as during 2018, this was even happening in regular individual messages, not just messages that were supposed to be group messages.

The other annoying thing about having to manually download a message, is that before I click on download, it tells me the message will expire in 3 days.

During June 2018, there was one message I forgot to click download within that time frame. I tried 4-5 days later, and it told me it had expired.

So whenever Samsung Messages makes me download a full message first, it has a 3 day expiration window for each message.
