If I go to Settings>Accounts>Google and then disable auto sync of App Data and Gmail, will I still receive immediate notifications?

Auto Sync and Notifications

Not if you remove GMail sync. Other apps might work, but if you disable GMail sync then you won't be getting GMail notifications. App Data is just for general settings back up, it doesn't affect notification behavior.
