On the Motomaker site they want you to select a background.

Are they all pre-loaded and you can choose once you get it or are the MotoMaker backgrounds individual / special?

False. There are a bunch of standard wallpapers included with the moto x in addition to the one you select on motomaker. However most of the choices in motomaker are not included with the phone.

There is a thread on XDA right now with instructions on how to back up your custom wallpaper. A few of them are up there, but not all (several are tiny, tiny thumbnails).
How to Pull Custom wallpaper no root required. - xda-developers. I've attached the ones that are "good".

I figured they'd all be pre-loaded. I'm suddenly wishing I had paid a little more attention while selecting my wallpaper. That water one is pretty slick.

Ok let's expand this conversation's scope.

For the MotoMaker website customisations there are three things:
1) Power On
- Is Power On customizable 'post' moto maker?
2) Wallpaper
- Appears this is in the air.
3) Google Sync.
- I assume this is just pre-loading my Gmail etc... and that is easy to do at home.

Power on is customizable without root. There is thread over at xda.

Wallpapers were all on my X. They didn't load my splash screen, wallpaper or my Google account. I wasn't going to send it back though.
