Backspace Key doesn't work in Portrait mode

I need some suggestions about a bizarre problem with my 5-year old Samsung Note 10.1 tablet. For a few weeks now, when using the glass virtual keyboard in landscape mode (screen oriented wider than tall), the backspace key (circled in red in the first picture) doesn't work anymore. It gives either a zero "0" or a newline depending on which is closer. I know that it has nothing to do with the physical position on the glass since even after rotating it 180° the backspace key (now in a different position on the physical glass) still fails in landscape mode.

In portrait mode (screen oriented taller than wide) the backspace key (circled in red in the second photo) works normally.

Android version 4.1.2 is the latest version which my hardware supports, according to Samsung. Maybe a table mapping X,Y coordinates to characters that got messed up. How can I refresh it?

How would I do that? If it were a USB hardware keyboard, I could just unplug it and plug in another one. But this one is built into the OS.

Go to Play (with the Play app) and install another keyboard. Then set that as the one you're using. I use SwiftKey Keyboard and the backspace key definitely works in landscape mode - I just checked it.

Rukbat, I tried to install the SwiftKey Keyboard per your link it would not download. See the message circled in red here:

I moved this from the 2012 Nexus 7 forum to the Note 10.1 (2014) forum.
