Coming from the iPhone, I am used to iTunes automatically backing up the phone, so if I damage or lose the phone, or need to do a full reset, it can reload all of my apps and settings on the phone. Is there anything I can do in (preferably in OSX, but I have Win 7 and Vista computers available as well) that can perform a similar function on the Android (HTC Amaze 2.3.5)? What can I do to back-up the device? I have all the contacts synced with GMail, but I more concerned with the apps. Will I just have to redownload all the apps I had and start over?

I have tried to search but there is so much info out there that it is hard to get a clear answer, so thanks for any assistance.

For a full system backup, you'll have to root the device and use an app to perform that function. This will save apps, including saved app data, and allow for future restore.

Read thoroughly before attempting to root.

If you don't want to root the device then there are a few options to backup the device, but not as complete.

Contacts: Sync with Google, as you've already done.

Text: Download an app and backup text. There are a few good ones in the Market that offer different backup options.

Apps: Go to Menu > Settings > Privacy and Security > Backup to Googles servers. (This will allow app backup to Googles servers, but its not the best option to have the data restore alongside the app. You can log into the desktop version of the Market and see the apps you have downloaded to your phone. If for some reason you need to reset and have no backup, this will allow you to view the app history and select the ones you want pushed back to the phone. Only hiccup is that you'll likely lose the app data)

SD Card: Simply plug the phone into the computer and bring up the device when detected. For Mac, this should load automatically. On a windows PC you'll need to download the phone drivers, which can be obtained from the carrier or manufacturers website.

I hope this helps. The best option is to root the phone and use a third-party app. Read through root (its just like jailbreak) and find out the Pros, and Cons, of doing so.
