Backup Nexus 7 to desktop or laptop?

I am very new to all this. I have justacquired Nexus 7 and have installed a few paid apps. I have read this thread with increasing confusion. I want to backup everything: Layouts, data, account info, apps . It appears that I have to root before I can do this, but readiing the toolkit instructions, this involves losing all the above. You recommend Android Debug Bridge, but I find that this is a command line product, so I doubt that I could use it - (I am very un-techy).

Is there no way for a computer simpleton to achieve what I want?

use carbon backup. this thread is old and carbon didnt exist at that time.

you can use carbon to backup without root. there are still some limitation but features are added every week.

Thanks for this prompt reply. I have located this and will investigate.

Carbon - App Sync and Backup

no root, free version does everything you want to get your app data or apps and app data.

The description in the google play store tells you all you need and there is more you can figure out. I use the free version to do mine. I have testing a couple ways with different apps and it works very well. You can backup to cloud with free version but can restore from cloud only with paid version. I also recommend ES File Explorer for copying from your nexus to PC if you do internal storage.

Only troublesome issue I have had is if I restart my device I have to reconnect it to the desktop app to reinitialize the app.

Carbon backup has been renamed to ?Helium - App Sync and Backup?.

Don't you have to lock the Nexus 7 before rooting? Wouldn't this wipe out everything, which defeats the purpose of backing up?

^^^ root only ^^^
OK go to Android, Windows Phone, and Windows Mobile Development News, Information, and Howtos - XDA Developers look up the root tool kit for the n7
There will be detailed instructions in the root kit.
After root: go to the Google play store, download Google drive(or drop box), download titanium back up, install busy box.
Depending if you buy the pro. version you can do what they call a batch backup (press the menu key and select the batch back up). Everything highlighted in red is system files don't try to mess with those too much. But with titanium you have the option to export the entire batch file to Google drive or drop box. If you want to back up all of your settings boot image text pictures basically everything you have on your device till the point of the back up you do what's called a nandroid back up. For nandroid backups you need something like clock work mod.
Go to the Google play store and download rom manager it will have an option to back up the rom,and press flash clock work mod recovery.
(Warning make sure your battery is at least 80% I recommend 100% before doing this) once you flashed clock work press back up rom. It will reboot into clock work mod recovery and then run command line scripts to back up everything. The process should take about maybe ten minutes. Once it reboots the back up is done. Then you can use a file manager to find the nandroid and send it to the cloud

INSPIRE AOKP ICE COLD SANDWICH ROM ;)

Apologies for reviving a necro thread guys

I was attempting to install Windows drivers for a Samsung Tag2 for Helium, but Australia is not mentioned (hey, we're used to it lol)

Would the correct region really matter??

cheers

(Yes I realise I'm replying in a Nexus thread as well :p but have an N7 2012 model on the way, and thought I'd give it a shot with my old Tab2 in the meantime)
