Bad Wi-Fi Range

WiFi vs Bluetooth

I noticed that I got almost no WiFi range until I turned off Bluetooth. Then It was fine. Anyone else?

I'm kind of surprised that this isn't getting more press. It is sprint biggest phone launch. It hasn't even shown up on the front page of this site.

Does anyone know what Wifi chip the incredible uses? Is it the same as the EVO?

The EVO and Incredible are very similar to each other, they have a lot of the same hardware and the same Android 2.1 OS with sense. From a software point of view the only difference are the Sprint vs Verizon specific stuff. As far as I know the Incredible isn't having any of these Wifi problems. The only way I can see this being a software issue is if the EVO and Incredible use different wifi chips, because then maybe its a bad driver, but even then the Nexus 1 has the same chip and OS and it doesn't seem to have any problems either.

Its starting to look more like a hardware issue.

I'm joining the rant. Wifi on the EVO is significantly worse than on my old Palm Pre. I'm hoping for a quick fix for this.

I thought I was the only one. I thought I was going to have to buy a new router. I'm glad other people are experiencing this. Hopefully 2.2 will boost it somehow. It doesn't appear to slow down the speed at all though.

Ok, now I'm confused.

Basically, the way I am comparing Wi-Fi performance between my EVO and my Palm Pre is through my Airave signal. On my Palm Pre, the signal ends right as I step out of my front porch. On my EVO, it behaves similarly, if not slightly better. Regardless of the fact that everywhere in my house I can't get better than 2 bars (had full bars with my Palm Pre).

Same here, I am in my office which is the room above my router and get 1 'bar. In my basement i get full strength.

Hmm well the wifi antenna in it is a common one...so hopefully a firmware update can fix it and its not a hardware issue.

Hows the output power on the wifi when you are tethering?

add another one

yep, same here, standing outside my house .. next to the window in the room where the router is... 1 bar.

Do the normal sprint hash codes work on the EVO? On other sprint phones you could type ##debug# (##33284#) to see more information about what is going on with the phone. You can generally see how the phone is operating and some pertinent information specifically relating to signal strength. This might help narrow things down to know if it is actually a display issue (from reading the 12 pages, it sounds like it might only be a display issue).

I can be standing right in front of my router and still only get a couple of bars. This needs to be fixed ASAP

Have the Inc and the EVO connected to my Linksys WRT54g router in the same room - 15 feet and two walls from the router. The Inc is much better with a "good" or "fair" connection at 54mps. The EVO is "poor" and only connects at 36mps. If I go stand beside the router, it is excellent & 54mps but then drops about every 5 feet I move away until it is back to poor. I would bet the power for the wifi antenna is turned down more vs the Inc to save power. Just my guess.
