Bad Wi-Fi Range

I'm pretty much in the same situation as Darth except I use 3G :(

But luckily 3G works great with this phone.

WiFi Range Horrible

Hi guys,
No science needed on my part. WiFi performance is atrocious! I live in a 3 floor house. Router is located exactly in the middle of the house (in all three directions). I get usable reception with my EVO on the middle floor (where the router is). I am rarely able to use WiFi upstairs and can't use it at all downstairs. I can use all my other WiFi devices anywhere in or around my home. At the gym, I barely had enough range to use Pandora.

I am taken aback that no review mentioned this. I would hate to think HTC would knowingly release this phone with an unfixable bug. Given that 4G is scarce and we all use WiFi to compensate for the slowness of data over cell networks this is highly disappointing, this is a major problem. Not to mention I get no cell service in my office building and not so great service at home. I have 30 days before I have to return this phone. I like it otherwise (was using a pre before this one).

Anyone have pull with any of the major publications like cnet or engadget? The sooner this gets publicized the better.

I second this, well said. This should be given top priority, it's a big deal for me also.

Has anyone tried to change any settings on your router?

I'm not going to because I know it's worked fine on over a dozen other devices, so I'll just leave it until we get an official word.

While speeds aren't what they were touting yet, we at least get simultaneous voice and data so that's a plus.

That's exactly what I'm talking about...focusing on the positive! :D

P.S. South subs stand up!!! Next time I'm in Homewood, I'll pick up some Aurelio's in your honor! :D

I just noticed it today, but the Wi-Fi range really is abysmal. Speeds seem to be fine as I'm getting 7.43 DOWN and 0.81 UP with Bright House Networks. We recently installed a Wireless N Netgear router and I am able to get signal until the end of my driveway with my laptop (G band) and until the front porch with my Palm Pre. I got 1-0 bars with my EVO in the master's bathroom, which is horrible.

Now I hear that the Wi-Fi card in our phones is actually N-capable as with the Nexus One. Do you think we can enable the N band and hopefully boost performance? I hope it isn't a hardware issue (crappy Wi-Fi antenna) as it will limit our options to resolve this.

Personally, I'd rather have no 4G and a normal functioning Wi-Fi reception.

Got this problem too, not a dispaly problem either. I'm getting less than half the d/l speed on the Evo compared to my laptop in the same location, about 2/3 speed on upload.:(

evo shows 1 bar, laptop shows "excellent"

If i understand it correctly currently Android 2.1 doesn't support 802.11N so it is not currently possible. Andorid 2.2 does though so in a month (being optimistic :p) when they release it for the EVO it may be enable-able.

As for a performance increase moving to N, I would say little to none. At least not for how its implemented in this phone. N generally needs multiple antennae to see distance improvements (MIMO) vs G, but it will likely only have 1 for space reasons which already seems to possibly be weak.

You know, thinking about it I am curious about whether they are using the same antenna for wifi, and wimax (wifi @ 2.4 GHz, and wimax @ 2.5 GHz) and if they had to de-optimize for any one signal so that they could accomodate both.

Just chiming in to say im also having issues. My pre and my Evo sit side by side on my desk while one has almost full strength while the other can barely stay connected.

Numerical as in power level or in percentage?

My router has a section that lists the signal level % for each device and it is corroborating what my EVO is showing. It shows between 25-50% signal level when i'm in the same room as my router and I get 1-2 bars on my EVO.

Numerical as in a number. I am looking for some numbers off the phone, measured in dBi or dBm. Something like that. If that shows that the signal is good, then there is something wrong with the display.

There's an app in the market called "wifipowersavingoff", says its supposed to "fix WiFi drop issues". You think this may help on the EVO? You need root access, anyone want to try it?

No real problem on my EVO. Full bars (3) in the same room as the router (ATT Uverse gateway), with the SpeedTest.net App pretty much maxing out at 7Mb/s down, 1.5mb/s up.

Drops to 2 bars about 60ft away in the family room, same speeds.

Drops to 1 bar about 90ft away (furthest point from the router), speed dropped to 6mb/s down, same up.

Actual connection speed is 12mb down, 1.5mb up, which I get close to those both wired and wireless from my laptop.

So, basically, I think the phone is likely cpu limited to that 7mbs speed (cpu can't handle any more than that), and all in all, I would say no issues for me.

I wouldn't expect my phone to have the range of other stationary wifi devices with a dedicated larger antenna. The EVO is better than my previous HTC Diamond, which was even more cpu limited.

No way its CPU limited to 7 because I've gotten as high as 15 down. My connection is 101 down, 15 up.

I'm surprised that no review on the web caught this issue. I dont understand how you would miss something like this when you are reviewing the unit.

Not sure I would consider a palm pre a stationary device.

This is definitely NOT just a display issue. I'm using WebSharing app to transfer music to my EVO and 25 feet away I'm getting around 3mbps, then I'll run over to my router and instantly get 10+mbps. This really sucks.

90ft? wow - you have a big house :-)

Having a problem too.

Wifi, no good.
3g, much better than my Pre.
4g, no existent even though it's supposed to be :(
