Basic SMS Customization?

Is there an app that will allow changing the stock Sms conversation colors or is using a large app like Chomps the only way to get these basic options?

check out handcent, chompsms, and if you want to keep the stock chat style but want popup sms check out sms popup. no matter which one you use, be sure to go into the native text messaging settings and disable notifications or you will get duplicates.

Handscent is so customizable its ridiculous ... Bar non the go-to app for sms customizing.
