Battery Life 4.0.2 -> 4.0.4

EDIT: the only things i wish is that google would add profiles for sounds and ringtones for notifications and calls from ppl and even separate them at that level. I would like to see faster blinks with the LED and some built in LED customization, but out over everything this phone is still quieter then any phone I have ever had

If you don't mind paying for a third party app, Lightflow allows for all kinds of led customization...colors, speed, etc. And it also allows you to add a specific contact which you can then set up to have a unique notification sound, vibrate pattern and led light.

Interesting. I have no such luck with my battery...
4.0.2
Auto brightness
Everything off
3g only

The one day + with 3 some hours was a very good day. I always get between 3 and 4 hours of screen on time and usually no less than 13 or 14 hours of total time up to a day +. I have syncing on, a bunch of widgets, phone set to cdma/lte.....although I am just outside of a 4 g area. I do spend about 25% of my time on 4g, 35% on 3g, and the other 40% on wifi. Screen is on auto. I tend to surf the net alot, play some angry birds, use the facebook and youtube apps, listen to some music and make a few phone calls on an average day. Some days if Im watching netflix movies or hitting navigation really hard Ill throw it on the charger in the car while I run around and that will get me through just like an average day.

I am still on 4.0.2, and I was getting abysmal battery life. I did a factory reset, and my battery is lasting most of the business day with really not anything throttled. I think I had an application or applications that were the cause of my woes. Also, at home on wireless battery life is actually pretty darn good.

If I flash 4.0.4 and don't install a kernel or anything, just keep it stock, will I have to revert back to the old 4.0.2 OS in order to receive OTA's or will I be okay with the 4.0.4 ROM and still be able to receive OTA's?

From what I have read if you flash the 4.0.4 it removes root so you should still get the OTAs. I unlocked by bootloader last night and flashed the 4.0.4. I never rooted the phone, and I have no super user permissions so they phone should still get all OTAs

As I understand it (please someone correct me if I am wrong)

It's not the SuperUser that stops you from getting the OTA updates, it's once you install a custom recovery like ClockworkMod, TWRP, or AmonRa.

As long as you just root the phone and put SuperUser and BusyBox on you should be just fine.

The custom revocery is the file that makes it so you can't use OTA's.

A while back I used to have a Samsung Fascinate that I rooted put SuperUser and busybox on, but never put CWM on and was still able to pull OTA updates just fine.

There is even an app in the market called OTA Rootkeeper for people who want root but also still want OTA's you could always give that a whirl.

hope this helps :)

Under 4.0.2 I had to recharge once during the day to make it through to the time I plugged in overnight.

With 4.0.4, I can make it a day and a half with similar usage. Highly recommend the update, there's no downside. You can always flash backwards.

I'm not going to flash it now. I'm waiting for the official release and I'm not going to stick with 4.0.2 when it does come out. I was just curious and wanted to know what to expect.

You are correct I am still learning about rooting :) I used Fastboot and used CWM to install 4.0.4. I am still new to rooting, but from what I have learned here is fastboot allows you to use the CWM (or other program) without actually installing it on the phone.

what is the point of routing without a custom ROM?

I'm assuming that you mean rooting, and not routing...

There are a lot of good reasons to root, there are several apps that you can use only if you're rooted, you can also install themes, overclock, install custom kernels, etc...

Now, onto the subject, I'm glad to see that 4.0.4 does seem to help the battery life a bit. I've got a custom ROM and Kernel installed that is averaging me around 27 hours of battery life. If battery life is important to you, then the best thing you can do for yourself is get a custom kernel and undervolt/undeclock your phone, it helps a lot.

Another thing, if you are really only getting 2 - 2.5 hours of battery life if you leave the screen on, then there is something wrong with your phone and you should do a factory reset, or try and find what app is stealing all of your battery. You're the only person I've seen that has reported that their phone dies after 2 hours with the screen on...
