Battery Life Fix!

Update:

I put g+ back in service and I didn't notice the 1:1 sleep time battery time I had earlier, but awake time was increasing. Turned it back off. Will keep evaluating.

I don't believe G+ is the issue. If that was the case every phone would be doing it I would imagine. You guys that think G+ may be causing it and have crappy battery life do you actually have a full working G+ account with people etc on it or just a blank setup?

The reason why I don't think it's that is because my phone and G+ have been running for 13h 14m 18s as of right now. I haven't actually used G+ and it has 1m 38s of cpu time.

Does anyone know why the OS is using up so much battery life?? It stays awake even when my phone isn't in use. I took a 4 hour nap and my battery went down roughly 6-10%. This can't be right if I wasn't even using the phone.

I still use G+, but I did disable background data yesterday. I haven't seen a change either way in battery life. I really think I'll have to evaluate battery life in a couple of weeks or so. I simply just use the device all day long, and cannot accurately judge battery life while still so excited to play with it constantly.

Interesting. I may just go ahead and totally disable the app to see if it makes a difference.

Same thing with me. My battery drained 30% (went to bed with 70%, woke up with about 40%) over 12 hours when I was sleeping last night:

I disabled the background data on G+ and Facebook and I have noticed my OS Keep Awake time drop SIGNIFICANTLY. It is hard to tell if this is having a dramatic affect on the battery or not, but thus far I would say that I am getting better battery life. So far today I'm at about 5.5 hours on battery, 83% battery remaining, and the Android OS Keep Awake is at about 1.5, which is where it was at when I switched the G+/FB background data off. Previously my keep awake has been above 50% of my total uptime...

All of that being said, my Android OS battery usage is still very high (38%). Previously it had been running around 20%... That may just simply be because I haven't had my phone on as much today and as soon as the screen sucks up some juice the OS percentage will drop.

Interesting to note however that with the G+/FB background data off, my wifi appears to not be turning off when I turn off my screen (a highly recommended battery saving feature). Possibly because with the G+/FB background data toggle turned off, those background process will default to using the wifi and are therefore not letting the wifi go to sleep when the screen is off. Just a guess.

How are you disabling background data on Facebook?

Qazme, you might be right. All I know is, after I disabled this app (I haven't used it, but I do have a G+ account with circles and whatnot), there is a much smaller difference between the "Awake" instances and the "Screen on" instances in the discharge detail screen. (Meaning there are a lot more "awake" bars than "screen on" bars before I made the change, and they are about the same after).

Currently at 7:08 battery and 4:08 awake (Android OS).

How do you disable the background data for FB? I went to settings>accounts/sync and FB wasn't on there. Only Gmail/Skype/Soundcloud was. I unsynced soundcloud since I rarely use it. Facebook was not on there though.

Edit: Also, I've hardly used the phone and the battery has lasted 20 hours and it's at 29% charge, That seems low for me refreshing Facebook twice and reading an entire 4 articles on Currents. The phone has been in sleep for roughly 14 hours of that that time also, but the Android OS is still sucking up nearly as much battery as my screen.

Disabling is maybe not the correct term, I/we should be saying "restrict background data." And this is done by going into settings, data usage, scroll down and click on Facebook and then check the restrict background data box. As previously mentioned you have to put a data limit on before you can restrict background data for specific apps.

NVM, Limit cap was at 5 and I didn't realize it.

Thanks for the help though.

This is precisely the "battery bug". The OS is keeping the phone awake. Nobody is sure why.

I think it's not quite as clear cut as that. I now have my OS keep awake time time very low (it's not increasing at all since making these changes to G+/FB), but the OS battery usage is still quite relatively high at 36%, but only because my screen hasn't been on much today. Right now my battery is at 82% even though my phone has been on for over 6 hours.

Just to be clear, since a checked restrict background data on G+ and FB, my Android OS keep awake time has almost not increased at all, and I made these changes like 4 hours ago. Bug be gone?

Disabled apps are at the bottom of the apps list not in the alphabetical order that you would expect.
