Battery life thread

I can't stand how everyone gripes about this battery. Take the thunderbolt for example, everyone just said get the extended battery. Then when they did everyone complained it was too big and heavy. I personally kept the stock battery and it was OK, but the razr with its stock battery gets another few hours for me a day.

Even if the battery was removable and replaceable, how many people would actually get a bigger battery? Not me. It works fine. If its not enough bring a charger. Car or home. The phone charges really fast.

Not everyone is getting good battery though. My phone only lasts 8 hours MAX.

I personally wouldn't stand for a phone only lasting 8 hours. I'm at work for longer than that with no access to an outlet. phones should at a minimum last 16-18 hours unplugged. unplug when you wake up and charge while you sleep.

Not only am I getting poor battery life, but it takes forever to charge as well. I ran my battery all the way down yesterday until it powered off. Leaving the phone off, I hooked it up to the charger and it took almost 2 hours to get to a full charge. I'm hoping that running it all the way down and then a full charge may help extend my battery life. If not, I don't know what I'll end up doing.

Sounds like Motorola has a bad batch of unremovable batteries on their hands...this could get ugly.

Thank God I'm not one of 'em.

I unplugged my fone at 100% at 10:00 A.M. and by 1:30 P.M. it was down to 15%. On 3g 80%. of the time. Then it took almost 45 minutes to charge till 90%. Feels like the thunderbolt all over again.

Use smart actions to turn off data when screen is off.

The problem is that i would be listening to pandora or online podcasts. And when im not doing that, i would turn data off. Like today im going to have data off most of the day to see how long it last.

There is no way to plug in? I'm not trying to be a prick, I mean, think about it. It's a computer with a battery of a smart phone. No phone for that matter will be able to stream data all day. What about downloading the audible app for podcasts. Download to the external card and listen to later and turn off data while listening perhaps? Just trying to understand/help out.

I have the smart action set to turn off data when the screen is off and I have Pandora going at the same time. Having the screen turned off (including data) does not affect Pandora playing.

FWIW:

So far the biggest yield in increased battery life for me is to use EITHER wifi OR cellular data, and not bother having both enabled at the same time. (Thanks to previous posters, I can verify that only MMS is affected if you have wifi on and no cell data running -- and you still get the message, just not the pic.)

I believe that my case isn't globally applicable, but might affect some: according to VZW's maps, I'm in a 4G coverage area. Fact is, if I hold the phone up in the air, near a window, I get about 1bar of 4G (3G I get just fine). So what I noticed happening was the 4G connection going on and off constantly, virtually all day. I'm theorizing this causes a lot of work on the phone to keep toggling its data stream and link-up/tear-down of connections. So if you have a really good, consistent 4G connection, this might not bear as much fruit for you. But it increased my battery perf substantially for me.

Clearly the data connection isn't being disabled. It sounds like smart actions is smart enough to not turn the data connection off if it's active.

Pandora is internet radio. It can't steam with no data connection. Impossible. You're either using WiFi or cellular data.

In an attempt to increase already fine battery life, I was looking through the task manager to kill some stuff. What do you guys know about things like com.motorola.storageoptimizer and other similar things? What's the advantage to having these run?

I didn't see how this could work either. I have Wi-Fi completely disabled on my phone and everytime I turn the screen on, the 4G symbol is gray. From what I understand (and I could be mistaken) this means that the phone is not connected to a data connection. I'd love to understand why I can't get more than 6-7 hours of battery so please correct me if I'm misunderstanding something.

Task Managers/Killers are like politics around here. People get a little nuts defending them or trashing them.

I think they're OK "used in moderation". Use them for info. Even use them to occassionally kill an app that you think is misbehaving or using too many resources. But be careful with overuse or setting apps to auto-end. Some apps run on a schedule (or consistently) to check for updates, etc. If you auto-kill them, they just keep trying to restart and get you into a loop that ends-up using way more resources than you think you're saving.

Android OS, like linux, will automatically trim-out the deadwood or swap-out processes if it thinks it's resource bound (especially on the memory side).

So that may be as "middle of the road" an opinion you'll find on Task Managers/Killers. As always YMMV. Good Luck!

I had to disable background sync while my screen is off and enable when the screen is on in smart actions. Two separate actions. I use exchange email set to push, and simply tap the power button to check for new mail. Phone on overnight and my battery only dropped 4% using circle widget.

When it gets disabled it goes away completely.
