Battery life thread

I too found out if you're in a fringe area of 3G / 4G that the constant switching of the radios will kill the battery. Best to turn off the LTE at that point.

I've been on 4G all day today and I'm at 60%. Going on 8 hours and 31 min. Took some pictures, video, couple of texts and a little bit of calls. Streamed music for just a little bit and listened to a downloaded podcast.

WiFi turned off, GPS on, Bluetooth off, rock solid 4G signal the whole time. Very pleased.

Are you using "Battery Extender" to turn off background data while your screen is off?

Just an FYI, I installed Juice Defender Platinum two days ago and pretty much my battery easily lasts all day (from about 5AM to 10PM before I charge it at 30%). One of the settings you can make is to have the radios shutdown (aside from the 1X for texts and calls) after 2 minutes of data inactivity. Thus if you have your phone in your pocket the radios shut off and your phone uses almost no juice. Then you can set it to pull in your stuff only once every 30 minutes. The free version works well, but I liked the customization of the Ultimate one. Has anyone else been using it?

Well I found a bettery drain this afternoon (this was no surprise).

I have over 2,000 contacts in my phone. I have two exchange accounts and one google account all have a lot of contacts. Like I said, over 2,000. There were a lot that needed to be updated, deleted, added, and duplicates from the different accounts merged so I spent a couple of hours today consolidating accounts to groups, adding and deleting, etc... Well, every single addition, edit, deletion, etc... on all 3 of those accounts were being pushed down immediately to the phone. The phone was basically syncing CONSTANTLY, bringing information up and down. I didn't notice this until I grabbed my phone, and it was down to 30%. This is the first time I have EVER got it that low during the day.

Interesting thing I thought I would share. If I ever do that again (hopefully I don't!) I'm going to either plug the phone in to power, or disable background data sync while all those changes are made.

Nope. I had no smart actions applied. Phone was still updating tweets, weather, gmail, etc.

Wow, I still don't understand how you guys are getting such amazing battery life, especially with 4g turned on. I usually have my 4g turned off cuz the signal for me at work isn't good. I have 3g on and I have a smart action set up to turn off background data when my screen is off and while the phone is not charging. With this set up I can probably get like max 12 hours on a charge with light to moderate use. Am I doing something wrong?

I'm curious to know what percentage use people's Display and Android OS are. Android OS is usually between 30-45% and Display in the same range. For those of you that are getting great battery life, is that the same for you? I saw a screen shot somewhere of one that was between 20 and 30% for both. Wondering if that is the problem of my battery consumption. My brightness is at 20%

My display is at 31% and my Android OS is at 19%.

Right now I'm showing 26% Android OS, 23% Voice Calls, 21% Display and then various (Gmail, Cell Standby, WiFi, Facebook, Music, etc) all at single digit percentages.

If I leave my 4G on at home where it will switch constantly between 3G and 4G my battery drains A LOT faster. But I have WiFi there so it's really not a problem. Just wish there was a widget or smart action that would switch from LTE to CDMA without having to drill down through all of the menus....

+1 on that.

We need a widget or smart action

Would love a smart action that knew I was downloading an app from The Market and would switch to 4G, or when I hit the brower button go to 4G. Dont need it on all the time, but when I need it I want it to be there.

i have had my razr for about a week and im still not impressed in the battery. maybe i just got a dud and should exchange it for another one. ive done everything that has been suggested in every forum. the one thing ive noticed that my razr is doing and ive not seen posted by others is this. when i goto battery info and see what components are using most battery. At the top is always Media. its always at something like 56%. is anyone else seeing this. ive got it set to use only 3g and the same happens when im using wifi. when i hit the media button to see what all apps are included, this is what is listed. com.motorola.burstmodeviewer, com.motorolla.android.omadrm, OMA download, media storage, downloads, download manager, mediasync, drm protected content storage.
this morning i had 100% battery and after playing angry birds for about 20 min and transfering some mp3s to my phone im down to 20% in just about 3 1/2 hrs. any help would really be appreciated

Media shouldn't be sucking up a lot of battery unless you're constantly listening to music or it's syncing something. Some of those others you listed also make me think you've got the phone syncing with some PC or server for your MP3s, and it's not doing you any favors.

Sorry, without actually poking around your phone, I can't be more specific, but other than possibly being used for ringtones (but not typically), Media shouldn't need to be using all that battery, for sure.

Some of those make me think it's Motocast or something similar. You can probably use Task Manager and safely kill them once and check back 10-15min later and see if any restarted themselves.

in about 5.5 hours today I went from 100% to 16%.

- on 3G for about 5 of those hours, LTE about 30 minutes
- for about 2.5 hours I was on wifi at home and syncing songs to my Spotify app.... i think about 200 songs fully downloaded. wifi was off the other 3 hours or so. I assume this takes some battery power?
- snapped a few pics
- took a video of 2min 20sec and uploaded that to Facebook on 4G (that took about 4-5 minutes)
- over the 5.5 hours, was probably messing with the Razr about 2 hours
- Bluetooth off

So, I'm not sure what to make of it. My phone was working pretty hard most of that time.

What do you think? Acceptable?

I guss not. I have been playing surfong etc and still at 60%. I dont stream media though

I'm thinking the reason why most people are getting crazy battery life is because they charge the phone before they fall asleep and then leave it unplugged while they sleep. I left mine unplugged over night and it only burned through 4% of battery over 8 hours. Also, a lot of people use wifi a lot so that helps a lot too.

I've noticed it Burns through the first 10% when you turn it on after a full charge.. Interesting..

I just unplugged an hour ago at 100% and now at 80%.

I have been texting and surfing tapatalk for maybe 40 minutes of the 60. Nothing else at all.

I have a solid 3g connection at 4-5 bars. I have auto brightness on and only Google is syncing. No apps running wild either.

This just doesn't make sense. I can literally watch circle widget tick down almost every minute or two it seems!

Any thoughts? This has to just be a bad battery. I have calibrated it also being an android vet. This phone baffles me with so many getting more than 10-12 hours EASILY.
