Battery life

Using the phone on WiFi should yield better SOT results as opposed to on a mobile network.

When I had the Priv, which had the worst processor I can think of (SD808) if I optimized a bunch of stuff and had it on WiFi, I could stretch the SOT to 5 - 5.5 hours of SOT, maybe even up to 6 if using non intensive apps. But on mobile network, it was tough to push past 4.5 hours.

How was the PRIV other than the processor? I've always thought it was an interesting device.

I think Google is doing something similar to apple. Proving that a spec sheet doesn't matter.

Obviously even the smaller battery on the pixels aren't making a difference from what I've been reading. I'm seeing great battery results.

Same with the ram. Apple uses less ram but their phones don't need it. Because they're optimized very well. Google's phones, same thing.

Just my .02

Was at the Apple store this morning.

Bought a new MacBook Pro.
Seen a lot of new stuff in there.
My old MacBook Pro was 10 yrs old.
And had a broke cord.
Keys missing from the keyboard.
a ball would pop up and spin when it had too much to process.

But it still worked

Ok. Now what does that have to do with anything. This is a thread about the battery life on the Pixel 4.

Optimization obviously helps a lot but we all know Google could've put a bigger battery in there. Look at Apple this year, they had decent battery with their past phones but this year they went big and it changed everything.

Checked my battery and discovered that Google was in active use since it came off the charger. Haven't seen this before. Google has never shown as active the entire time.

Anyone have any ideas on this?

Usually if your on Google assistant a lot or notification from Google feed , can force stop it and watch it's behavior

Don't and haven't been using Assistant a lot. And couldn't force stop it. Didn't work. Rebooted.

I've been getting more than acceptable battery life. I don't consider myself a power user but I can't complain at all...

For some reason, I don't like the phone illuminating if I pick it up just to jump in my truck. Motion Sense isn't great in that regard.

You can disable "Lift to check phone" in the settings menu under System -> Gestures.

I like keeping it disabled.

And you know Dauym well Samsung has nothing to do with pixel.
Google does.

Because Samsung also does software, theirs is just on top of Android. In fact any OEM that alters the software should be brought into the comparison. Otherwise, saying they have crap software doesn't mean anything until you have something to compare it to.

If I say Ford is a crap car company, who am I comparing it to? It's called perspective.

Perhaps an outlier but here are my stats one week in on the 4 xl. I used the paid version of Greenify with adb commands and Hibernation Manager. This phone is a beast!Screenshot_20191102-191000.jpeg

The best device I've ever used if it wasn't for that stupid SD808.

If it weren't for the painfully slow performance and overheating especially when navigating, I'd still be using it today, even two years after its last security update.
The battery itself was respectably sized at 3410mAh, powering a 5.4" AMOLED by Samsung.

I never liked the SD 800 series until 820 and up

I would lean more on the 2nd point. Probably didn't think too much about designing the phone around fitting a larger battery. They also probably caught off guard with the iPhone bumping the battery size and focusing more on battery this time. That got ever reviewer talking about battery as the main point and Google had no answer this late in the cycle.

More like HTC didn't think battery size would be a problem. HTC always made great phones but always seemed to fall short somewhere...

For my experience with HTC, battery was most always the issue. I started with the Droid Incredible, and my last HTC was the Rezound (even had the Thunderbolt for a bit but returned it due to battery life issues). None of them had stellar battery life (of course no phones really did back then) but I remember one if the first things I did when buying a phone back then was get an extended spare battery. It wasn't until I got a Droid Maxx (the second Maxx model the year they also had the Ultra and Mini) that I got decent battery life. After that phones seemed to get better in that department.

It did seem like a pretty amazing device! With a stronger processor I'm sure it would've been even better!
