Best Apps for Group Social Networking

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone could make any recommendations for a good social networking app/site for groups of people. Sort of like how Google+ lets you organize people into groups, but
only people I invite can join and I will only be social networking with the people in the group.

I have heard that groups on Skype costs money. I would prefer a free solution and not really like a video chat, but like a group chatroom (text).

Group text chats or voice calls do not cost anything. They are free. However, group video calls DO cost money.
