Best Buy Warning

Thanks for posting this Tyler. Best Buy is going to get their willy in a pinch real soon over this. Besides privacy policy issues Best Buy has broken a Federal law here.....

"In addition to retailers being required to accept the return of defective items, federal law provides a "Cooling-Off Rule " giving buyers three days to cancel purchases of $25 or more. Under this rule, the right to cancel for a full refund extends until midnight of the third business day after the sale. The rule applies to sales at the buyer's home or workplace, at facilities rented by the seller on a temporary basis, or at locations otherwise away from the seller's normal retail location."

Read what's exempt though. If you ordered the phone online from Best Buy, the law won't cover you. The "cooling off" period has a few exemptions. Ordering it online is one of them.

Exceptions to the Rule

Certain types of sales can’t be canceled, even if they take place in places normally covered by the Rule. The Cooling-Off Rule does not cover sales that are:

under $25 for sales made at your home;
under $130 for sales made at temporary locations;
for goods or services not primarily intended for personal, family or household purposes. (The Rule applies to courses of instruction or training.);
made entirely online, or by mail or telephone;
the result of prior negotiations at the seller's permanent place of business where the goods are sold regularly;
needed to meet an emergency;
made as part of your request for the seller to do repairs or maintenance on your personal property (purchases made beyond the maintenance or repair request are covered).

Also these large companies have legal departments. As much as it sucks I'm sure they have covered all their basis. best thing to do if a return is denied is dispute with your bank or the credit card company. Most states don't have laws regarding returns for general merchandise.

I do recall some people having issues returning the Note 7 to Target and Sams which by law they have to take back if it is deemed defective.

Here in FL it's one of the few states that have a law. It's 20 days if the return policy isn't posted. If Best Buy doesn't have it posted that they can deny your returns using this third party company, you might have a case here in FL if it's within 20 days and they won't accept it.

Florida:
Retailers that don't offer refunds must clearly display this fact at the place of sale. Failing this requirement, customers may return goods for a full refund within 20 days of purchase.

Not true. Here's a Best buy receipt from this past week. Nowhere does it say you can be banned and none of my Best buy's have statements by the registers claiming this. There is also nothing on their webpage where you are directed to view all return policies claiming you can be banned.

Duse it says it right there on the receipt under the 'ID info may be stored'. Guess what, your card number or Best buy number are also a form of ID. It's also under their return policy on their website under the 'Why we need your ID' section, which clearly states they can deny your return. Stop being obtuse.

None. The closest it says is "If we caution you or deny your return, you may request a copy of your Return Activity Report by calling 1-800-652-2331."

Nowhere does it state they can ban you from returns.

It says it right there that they can.

Oh I know they will, I worked there for almost 4 years. The problem is the can't really do so legally.

They actually can. It says it plain as day in their return policy they can. (the portion you quoted previously)

They actually can't if bought in store due to federal law and within 3 days and no it does not say anything about banning you for a period of time.

Show me where it says they can ban you for a period of time. I'll wait.

"Why rent when you can buy and return?"

I know people that do this..... and thats why they ruin it for the rest of us

Wow, I never truly buy at Best Buy because of the 15 days return policy. I mostly go and look at the product, compare prices and buy someplace else. This is even worse. Good luck to them. They already closed 400 stores nation wide. There will be more closing. Imagine buying a computer from there and it doesn't work at day 20? Which has happened to me from Apple? Nope to Best Buy. Thanks for this thread.

Well it day 20 that would be a manufacturer warranty the store no longer has liability, how long would you want them to be responsible for a sale a year

I'm just going to assumed that I'm banned or very close to being banned from further returns. About a month ago, I price matched a new cable modem and wi-fi extender in hopes of resolving home networking issues. Performance was spotty and attributed it to hardware. I realized that the modem I purchased wasn't the fix and the Wifi extender didn't perform as well as expected. I returned them separately and ended up with a Google Wifi kit.

The only reason I went to Best Buy is because I wanted an immediate fix without waiting for items to ship and find out they didn't perform as expected.

Best Buy to me is just a showroom for Amazon because better deals can be had there.

Doesn't Best Buy charge a restocking fee anyways on mobile phones and big ticket items?

Hi Blues Fan,

Unfortunately for Best Buy and fortunately for me we bought in the store, not online.

You are welcome. Spread the word. Thanks

Best Buy price matches Amazon if it is the same item.

Best Buy price matches Amazon if it is the same item.

BestBuy will price match just about anywhere as long as they can verify the price over the internet.

I had them knock $200 off the price of my Surface Pro 3 several years ago when it was $899 at Micro Center. I didn't want to drive the 30 minutes to Micro Center for the savings.

I've been hit with the retail equations ban hammer at Best buy for price matching items. I guess they would return the item I was price matching then repurchased it onto my account. In reality I rarely had any returns and all with receipt's. I'm elite plus member so I had 45 days to price match and we all know how long that is in electronic days, so I would frequently price match. They counted my GF returns towards my account (bad sensor and dead pixel on camera) . F best buy they will become the next circuit City...

They base the returns on net revenue from the customer. You can do over a dozen returns as long as the net result is significantly positive from a rolling basis. Other companies do this too, and rarely based on just a return count.

The point is they do not want rent a customers.

BEST BUY WARNING: Be careful. 3 returns/exchanges inside of a 1 year window and they decline your next return/exchange and ban you for a year from any further returns/exchanges. They use a third party company called The Retail Equation to track your purchases using your ID. Yes The Retail Equation is being sued by several at the moment including a class action suit. Just be careful, pay cash and give Best Buy NO personal information.

Amazon is king of returns. They'll take it back no questions asked, I think up to 30 days. Don't gotta deal with butthurt sales person. They even give you a shipping label and you just drop it off, free if it was defective or not your fault. I've returned things that weren't defective, they are nice about it. Just don't abuse it. I almost never buy from bigbox stores anymore, gotta focus on customer service as priority, my experience with sales people are terrible, no good customer service skills.

That's b.s. because they advertise their price matching deal. So they promote something and then cut you off. Their prices are high anyway. With places like sams carry more stuff and cheaper along with Amazon, they will start hurting.
