Hey all, I'm fairly new to the whole android scene but I have successfully rooted phone and done some minor tweaking. What I am really looking for now though is a stable ROM that I can run my VZW Fasicinate on to make it faster and improve battery life and lag. What is everyone using right now? What do you all recommend?

If you're just getting started, I recommend JT's Super clean ROM. It's very close to stock with a few tweaks, and has all bloatware removed. I consistently get close to two days of battery life using it along with the stock kernal

OK thanks, I will look into that one. What else is everyone using? And sorry if this is a dumb question but what is the difference between ROM and kernals? So I am assuming there are custom kernals vs. stock? What does the kernal do? Sorry but I am a noob lol.

the kernel tells the phone what to do with its self. basiclly its a set of instructions that tell the OS how to use the hardware. and yes there are custom kernels. i am using stupid fast. i like it, the only other one i have used is stock. STAY AWAY FROM VOODOO. you dont know enough to use it. dont feel bad most people dont, including myself. you can look at all kinds of threads about voodoo nightmares, including some from your truly. anyway i like stupid fast, it has helped a great deal with battery life.

I used JT's super clean ROM and non-voodoo kernel for DI01 and it was rock solid with great battery life.

for the new DJ05 ROM's I'm trying out sonofskywalker's customizable rom but having a few small issues that I'm trying to work out right now.

Ok, I will look into that. Thanks for the advice, I did see some other forums talking about Voodoo and I was thinking about trying it, lol good thing I didn't.

no problem. the one thing i should have done and did not enough of is study up. look on youtube for videos of people rooting their fascinates. you can never have enough info. had i know about the voodoo thing (my fault i didnt) i would have gotten about 12 more hours of sleep the 3 days it took me to screw up my phone, freak out, panic, calm down, read, study, post, unscrew my phone and finally get a root.

I agree with, Kevin. If you are just getting started, I would go with a JT SuperClean. You can always try a different Rom later. JT's Rom is pretty painless, stable, and a lot doesn't go wrong with this Rom. Also, please read carefully before installing Rom's and Kernels. There are Voodoo related kernels, kernels for DI01 OS builds, and ones for DJ05 OS builds. The same is true for Rom's. I'm just cautioning you to read carefully before installing. If you mismatch by having a DJ05 Rom but a DI01 kernel, you could be in for nightmare problems (e.g. bricking your phone). Moral of the story is read carefully and then read again. Ask questions. Good luck and have fun!

I ran Jt's rom and at first it was nice, over time it became laggy, (even with the fast kernal). It just felt boggy and I began to have little glitchy errors every now and then.

I've just recently gone with the Superdark, ran with the launcherpro, and digital clock app, and love the look. Just downloaded the nexus revamped live wallpaper, and changed it to the dark black theme background.. Phone is sex. Super fast, very neat, simple, nifty transition, the whole 9.

(Not my screen shot, but you get the idea of the interface.)

Damn man that is nice, I love the look of that! What kernel are u using with it?

nice recommendation on the super dark ROM... I think I'll check that out today and see how I like it. I love Storm's Blackish Theme, but he hasn't been able to update it since he's doesn't have a phone anymore, but it looks really similar to this theme.

so im also a newbie and if I were to try out the super clean rom how would I go about putting that on my fascinate... It is rooted but that is as far as I got ...

Thanks on the compliments…There aren’t any further Kernels. I’m using the digital clock, and launcher pro to get the icons to appear as they do at the bottom, although I have noticed that the contacts plug-in doesn’t work, but I hardly use it to begin with. These are all applications that can be had for free in the app market.

I’m at work now, but when I get home ill try and help you with a walk through on how to change the rom. It’s fairly easy, in fact all of this is. It seems complicated on your first rodeo ride, but after that you giggle at how easy it is. I’m having difficulty getting my custom boot animation to play, along with my boot up audio files. Tonight, I’m going to try and get these working, along with my quick search button reprogrammed to be a designated camera boot.

Some things you’ll want to get to be a certified dork are…

Rom manager,
This will allow you to do various different things, but most importantly change Rom’s on your phone, easily, and through your phone.

Astro file manager (or even better root explorer),
This will allow you to explore through the internal files of your device

Neocore,
This will clock your graphics processor.

Linpack for android,
Allows your to run benchmarks test, so that you can come back here and beat your chest.

I hope y'all don't mind me butting in here with a question. I REALLY want to try flashing the Super Clean Rom. I've read I need to flash ClockWork Mod via Odin first, then throuhg Root Explorer, I can flash the rom.

My questions are:
1. Where do I get Odin? And is it fairly straight forward to use? I know it's something I have to get for my computer, but I don't see where I'm supposed to get it.

2. Then I know I have to flash Clockwork Mod, but...I'm a little unclear on how I will do that through Odin. Is it rather evident?

3. My Baseband Version is showing S:i500.04 V.D101. So, I can't use the newest Superclean DJ105, right? I downloaded that through Rom Explorer, but did nothing with it. So, should I keep looking through Rom manager to find the most recentl D101 rom for SuperClean?

I'm a noobie to Android, but I am somewhat technically saavy. I"m just not finding exactly what I"m looking for. yeah, I know it's probably there, but maybe I'm not patient enough! :) Sorry.

Thanks for any help!

Please take a look at this thread it is also a sticky under Fascinate Roms/Hacks called Clockworkmod Recovery.

That should answer #1 and 2

And the Rom can be downloaded and installed via Rom Manager after you have Clockworkmod Recovery installed.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO MAKE A BACKUP BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANYTHING!

You can make a backup via Rom Manager.

***Forewarning*** Don't flash anything for another baseband version because it is the same thing as dividing by zero, death and destruction will come upon your phone!

Unless you are planning on making the jump to DJ05 which you should read the first post "read here" on what it fixes and what downfalls there are (i.e. Void Warranty) then I suggest sticking with DI01 roms and kernels.

Make sure to read carefully and learn up on these things before attempting anything.

Read, reading is good for you! Knowledge is power and all that good stuff.

P.S. if I have made a mistake or misspoken please let me know kthxbye! :p

Oh and I recommend, like the others, JT's Super Clean Rom v0.4 for DI01 baseband! I had zero problems with it!

I have failed to deliver what I mentioned and for that I apologize. Working for the big red, or any retailer this time a year is hectic and crazy.

I fully recommend the Super dark over other Rom's. Reason being, from what I understand (correct me if I?m wrong), It is based off of the super clean. It simplifies the simplified, which to me is golden. I like extremely simple, that way if i decide to clutter my phone, it's at least cluttered with my personalization.

My baseband is S:i500.04 v.dh12.

I haven?t gotten to extreme with Kernals, etc. (Mostly because I just haven?t had enough time to get knee deep), but like others have said... If you're new to this, take your time. Baby steps, don?t get carried away and do 500 new things in a night. Taking baby steps will let you refine your phone. If you over do it and don?t like a particular aspect, you may not know what to remove and add accordingly.

I'm in the same boat....Oh wise ones we need guidance

Tomorrow night I should have time to complete my latest update which will be the Dj05, accompanied by the latest SuperDark, and launcherpro.

Once all is completed and finised I will work on a step-by-step on christmas eve and post it here. It will hopefully be very intuative and noob proof... Hopefully.

I dont see a point in going forward with the step by step on the current superdark, etc. due to the fact that it is already outdated.

Their are a lot of videos on youtube. It would be best to start watching those to get up to speed. Patience is key.
