Best way to upload photos to Google Photos?

Now that we have unlimited storage I want to upload all of the photos on my Mac to Google Photos.

My photos are currently in a folder (I don't use iPhoto) which Picasa monitors.

Can I just copy (or move) the photos to my Google Drive folder or is there a specific method/sync program that I should use?

I've been looking online for tips on this but surprisingly couldn't find anything on how to upload photos from a Mac to the new Google Photos system.
