Beta version of Connection Checker - App to 'fix' 3G problem

But if I open/close the application the "Starting service" log message doesn't keep showing up.

Weird. I just opened and closed the app 3 times, 2 seconds apart. I get 3 new log entries. To be clear when I say Open I'm clicking on a Homescreen icon and when I say close I'm using the Back button.

This is all on a stock Optimus V.

Yeah - That is what I'm doing as well. I just tried it on a 2.2 emulator so I don't think that is the issue. Do you have this "Service Running" text on your screen, like in this screenshot?

No I do not. I just double-checked Settings | Applications and it definitely says version 1.0.2 too.

Any chance this will be updated or is it secretly a back-door and you're collecting all my personal info?

(the second part was a joke! :))

No More Data Problems

If you all want to stop you data problems ,call Virgin Mobile when they answer let them know you have called before and they have tried everything. Ask to speak to a "Live Adviser" tell them you have purchased an Lg Optimus ANDROID phone and have had problem surffing the web.Virgin has never had an android phone and there is code on sprint to set to android 3g. All other phone at Virgin Mobile are not android. Mine has not drop data while in service area for over one month since done. Hope this helps ??

If you all want to stop you data problems

This will not stop *all* data problems. E.g. Virgin has no control over my Wifi connectivity. There does appear to be an issue with certain peoples accounts that requires a call to VM but I'm not having that issue and I still find Connection Checker to be useful.

Ive not had any problems with the 3G service (as long as its not on there end lol)
I did the 4636 thing and have mine set to GSM/ CDMA auto (prl) I select that then turn off radio and back on. It stays on that setting as long as the phone is on. If you turn phone back off and on it reverts to the default setting. Battery last much longer, 3G I would say 98% of the time works no problem. Once and a blue moon I have to do the airplane trick.
Rom is stock.

I have worked on this app a ton. The display is completely overhauled, and it has major updates all around.

It has one tab that uses in-app billing, and since the app has not yet been published; if you try to buy it nothing will happen. Don't worry, this doesn't cripple anything and the app still works great. (If you are interested in helping me test in-app billing email me at jeremychase at gmail and I will whitelist your google account.)

This is really close to being published in the market so any lastminute feedback would be really helpful!

YOU MUST DELETE THE OLD VERSION! This new version will not install over the old because this one is 'signed' by me. So before installing this, remove the old one.

Good to see you active again. I have a feature request:

If Bluetooth is currently connected, don't toggle airplane mode.

More to the point: if I'm in the car on the way to work, I often lose signal in two locations. Toggling airplane doesn't help with that. But what it does do is kill my Bluetooth connection to my car so my music stops. Furthermore the Camry is a bit wonky about re-establishing the connection without turning the car off so it basically means I have no music.

Maybe detect if anything is actively streaming over Bluetooth? Not sure what the options are...

Thanks again for this great tool.

Once it's in the market, will we need to manually uninstall RC1/1.0.6, or will it overwrite?

It will overwrite it. (In theory anyway, I've never published an app before so I could be wrong.)

Thanks for the comment about the Bluetooth problem. I'll absolutely make that a configurable option. Right now I'm just fixing bugs, but will make this change for the next release.

FWIW:

RC1 killed my battery within 2 hours. I was playing music for my son and noticed it stopped. Woke the the phone and it said "No Service" and then it shut down by itself. I'm guessing it said "No service" because it was shutting down; I don't have service problems at home.

I've uninstalled it, as I need my phone to be working early tomorrow morning. I will install it again tomorrow (from the Market) and see if I get the same result.

Settings-wise here's what I changed from default:

  • Manage data was off (because of the aforementioned Bluetooth issue).
  • Wifi retry time was 5 minutes. Usually when I have wifi issues, it really only requires a toggle so 30 mins is excessive for me.

Thanks for the detailed information. I've setup my phone with the same options you had, and will see if something funky happens.

The core internet checking code hasn't changed much recently, and has seemed stable. If you see this happening again will you please try to confirm in Battery Usage that Connection Checker is the problem process? I'm going to try to reproduce this here as well, because killing the battery would be a *very* bad thing.

Ok, I'm at work (on Wifi), battery is 100%, installing ConnectionChecker, will let you know how it goes.

I completely forgot to post another data point last night...maybe a clue, maybe just a display bug:

When I got home and opened ConnectionChecker the "Using Wifi AP" message still had the SSID of my work Wifi.

That's as far as I got investigating it unfortunately as I had other stuff to do (i.e. I didn't try restarting the service and, as you know, my phone later shut down because of the battery).

So far so good at work so I'm thinking that last detail I posted may be the important one: when the Wifi network changed maybe things got wonky? We'll see when I get home...

Ah - I see why that connection status isn't getting updated. I'm forgetting to set it when the app is in a mode where it isn't managing the network state, so it is basically just a display bug. I'm guessing you had several log messages saying something like "On Mobile network and manageMobile not enabled, skipping". Already committed the fix for this; will be updated with next release..

So how was your battery when you got home?
