Bingo! I finally figured out how to get things straight in my Droid X 2.2 update

Guess I'll be giving this a shot. Being a factory restore noob, and not totally understanding what's gonna happen after those 15 steps...will i have to reconfigure settings and re-download apps? What will be lost during this process that won't automatically restore?

Do we do this before or after the update?
Before if possible. Most people have already upgraded though.

I think I am going to try this and see if I can get some improvement.

But one question though, do we ever enable backup/restore again?

Or once we complete this procedure and then log back in to gmail, then recheck them?

I would leave any sort of backup/restore for applications and data OFF. At least for a while until these issues get ironed out. Having the ability to sync contacts and calendars with google is good enough and most important IMO.

Yes, and everything (except your pictures etc. on your SD card, back that stuff up first). It's the same process as the day you got your device and set it up the first time. At least you know it's actually fresh and not pulling down data that can ( and will in my case) cause trouble.

After some feedback and some thought I did a slew of factory resets. The thing I kept missing was what order to do what in.

Every time before a reset I would go into privacy--> and uncheck backup my data as well as uncheck factory restore. The problem is, even after a factory reset by default automatic restore is check and all apps downloaded will still start pushing down.

Most of us just automatically log into our gmail accounts. The only way to get a truly clean reset is to NOT log into your google account after a factory reset. Just skip it. When the next screen shows up with choices of accounts to choose from asking you if you're done adding accounts... still, skip it - tap done adding accounts. Once you're fully booted, go to privacy--> you actually have to ENABLE or check off "back up my data" so you can uncheck "automatic restore". Once "automatic restore" is unchecked, then uncheck "back up my data again". Now you can log into your google account and you are finally fresh.

*(you may see a screen again with a check box asking if you would like google to back up your data - uncheck this)
As per usual, please backup any important info such as your pictures and format your SD card right before you do your factory reset.

Things seem to be much better this time around ;)

You are a miracle worker my friend. Anyone who has been in these forums has seen me listing all sorts of issues with FroYo. I am on phone 2 and reset 20+. I followed these instructions and every issue has been fixed (except the messaging, but who cares).

I did exactly what you said, but still having issues with my Facebook/contact pictures will not sync when they update a new one. The SMS is still not in correct order. It's driving me insane! However...my battery life is epic. I am amazed with it.

Ah ha! So this explains why I saw Flash on the Droid X when I put the official Froyo on it, despite having factory reset it. Nicely done.

Extra steps to hard-reset. Whoda thunk it?

I actually had an issue with my Incredible not syncing contact pictures but syncing everything else with Facebook. Might be a FB/Android thing. BTW... nice avatar! ;)

I just received a "like-new" replacement X today. I formatted my SD card in my old phone before I transferred it to the replacement, so I guess all that I have to do is install the Froyo, since the "like-new" is already in factory condition. Is this correct?

Before I perform this I want to double check something. When I go into the settings for "back up data" and I uncheck it, does that mean that my contacts saved on my Gmail account won't sync or just the phone settings itself? As long as I get my contacts back when I reset the phone I don't care. So just uncheck both of those options, manually back up everything on the SD card, format it on the phone, hard reset, bypass setting up accounts and just activate the phone on VZW... get into the OS then manually reinstall apps, set up gmail, etc?

You don't have to disable automatic restore if you skip logging in during the first screen and you log in afterwards it wont sync your apps back. thought you will get your contacts and calendar. Just tested it

This is why I always do a complete phone wipe before upgrading the OS. I've been doing this since when I had a Blackberry.

@thebizz... check all you want, you still have to disable restore if you want to be totally clean.

It will go into pre 2.2 restore if you sign in after the initial sign in sounds like your apps were the problem. Seeing you manually had to redownload them contacts and calendar are restored the same whenever you sign into your google acct

Fabrian, even though I will uncheck both options and then skip the login phase during the reconfiguration of the phone after a hard reset, I can log back in to my gmail account and sync my contacts back safely right? I could care less about program or app settings.

Or should I just go in and download all of my contacts in Gmail from my computer in a file and then upload them to the X manually without syncing with the Gmail account?

You can always get that back it should restore your gnai when you sign in if not go into my account click google and sync that should bring everything back

You will still be able to sync your google contacts

Awesome, much appreciated guys. I will give this a shot when I get home from work. Anything to make my X faster and smoother then it already is will be worth it.

Also, has anyone determined whether or not this fixes the "flinching wallpaper" issue, when scrolling between screens the wallpaper seems to, I guess, flinch a bit?
