Bionic's still coming, is defintely new hardware - XT875

Does anyone have any information on if this phone is going to be a global phone? I know the Droid 3 is going to be, but I would prefer the Bionic if it has global capabilities.

That would certainly be awesome. Not so much a deal breaker for me much anymore, but it would be a cherry on top and good for Verizon to offer such a vibrant global phone making it's market exponentially larger. Has any 4G LTE phones become global? That might be difficult to fit. In short, I don't expect the bionic will be a global phone, but it would be cool.

Ok, now try not to bite my head off, but it's time for me to chime in on the whole pentile display topic. I hit my local VZW store today and compared the DX2, DC, Rev & TB displays in quick succession. I loaded Google's main search page onto all of them and viewed them all from a normal reading distance (about 10 inches from my face). The first one I looked at was the DX2 and wow...after looking at it and comparing it to the others, I just don't understand the folks who say it looks fine to them. I officially fall into the "it looks horrible" camp. I immediately and clearly saw what looked like pixelation around all of the letters in the word Google. It's blatantly obvious to me. It did look "sharper" than the TB screen even with that pixelated appearance though...the TB just looked flat-out blurry in comparison to all of the other phones. The DC took the crown for best screen, hands-down...both in color and sharpness. The Rev came in 2nd with a pretty nice offering. Man, was I disappointed in the DX2 screen, knowing that's what we're supposed to be getting on the Bionic. I feel it's unacceptabel for a phone that's supposed to be such a beast to have such a glaring flaw.

I've always wondered if maybe CK was exaggerating a bit when it came to his critique/disdain of the pentile display, but after finally seeing for myself, I must admit that I completely agree with him now. I was actually starting to get excited about the Bionic again too, but that may have sealed the deal for me on just sitting back and waiting out the GS2 release. Anyway, here's hoping that the Bionic display has tweaks we're not aware of yet that will make it better than what I saw on the DX2.

And you did what everyone should do ... compare them for yourself. Some don't notice, some notice and are not bothered, some notice and are bothered by it, etc. The big thing is to try if for yourself, comparing all displays and let that be one of the many factors that go into buying a phone.

I finally took a look at the DX2 and I didn't notice anything bad. granted i didn't compare it to any other phones because I have no desire to buy any of those so the comparison would be moot. For me If that is the same screen the bionic has I am 100% ok with it. But again, its all personal. Anyone who hates it shouldn't get it, if you're ok with it, then its ok.

Re: Definitely July! [edit]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've been really busy with best buy mobile and am trying to confirm final specs of the bionic. My rep insists its a "a lightning fast omap dual core 4440", but im not sure i believe her. She swears this is what was in the employees guide, but im pretty sure she meant a 4460.because she stated it was a "power vr gpu @ 384 mhz" . Whatever that means.

No disrespect to anyone but I'm going to pass on this being reliable info.

Don't count on it being the 4460. Devices at the end of year MAYBE, but not now.

Can you link to the sources that are saying end of year? Thanks

Yup. Playing with the dx2 I notice it, but it doesn't bother me. I guess having lived with a pentile samoled display got me used to it.

I am in the "no big deal" camp. I too went to a Vstore and compared. I just do not study a display that hard. Its a tool I use plain and simple. I grab it, glance at it, and do what I need to do and put t back into my pocket.
I just hope it saves power over the higher end displays. I have been wondering if any tech-heads have found the power consumption comparisons between display types yet.

Because it would make the phone that much thicker. People already complain the phones are too thick and imagine squeezing another radio/sim slot in there.

I think if you read the FCC filing, you'll see that the chipset supports GSM, but that capability is disabled in firmware. Too bad . . . That truly would make the need to upgrade again next year that much less important.

If the bootloader is unlocked, isn't that then just a matter of putting on the right firmware and putting in a GSM SIM card? I travel to Europe once a year and it is nice having a phone I can either roam with or put in a Vodafone or other Euro Telecom SIM and have a working handset.

I am not sure about the 4460 in cell phones, but I found that they are in tablets and PDA's being released in September. That is not very far off, so it is not impossible for the Bionic to be in a phone released a month earlier.

Sorry about the link, guys and ladies. You need to enter OMAP4460 in the processor search parameter and then START, and it will show 4 devices slated for a September release that use the 4460.

Can't link you I'm mobile and on vacation but search around. There has been a lot of info on this chip floating around for some time.

IIRC tablets will see them this year. Q3 or Q4. I don't remember. Sorry.

The only info i've been able to find regarding availability is they were going to be testing the chips late last year/early this year and they would be available in devices 3rd quarter. I've seen a list of a few tablets that they will be in but have seen nothing saying they won't yet be available in phones.

Well, to the best of my understanding, its cousin, the Motorola Photon on Sprint will be 4g (WiMax) and a global GMS phone.
