Black blotchy mess/black crushing. Pixel 2?

It almost looks like a result of a low-res streaming bottleneck

Download the video and watch offline on your phone. See how it acts then.

Had a go and still seems the same. Only thing at the moment that seems to help is using saturated mode.

Well the shouty metal track did nothing for my hearing but I don't think I had the issue on my Pixel 2 XL running the 8.1 beta. But I don't seem to have the colour profiles on this beta.

Ah well at least I'm not a sucker for the generic mainstream music. Heavy music is too complicated for some.
Haha jokes aside Yeah we had a 2 XL and it wasn't as bad. Don't know if it had anything to do with the display itself but I doubt it.

The colour profiles are part of the Nov update which you won't get with 8.1. It will be included in the next Beta

I like a bit of metal but that was maybe a little much for me. Lol!! It was fun though.

Yeah. I thought it was a good option since there was simply no sign of any update on my new 2XL and was stuck on September 5th. I knew the 8.1 wouldn't update to November but at least I got the dimming nav bar. Enjoying 8.1 anyway.

I wish I'd taken 8.1 instead but it's okay I'll wait till the next version

Haha yeah it takes a bit of getting into. There's a lot out there. From crap stuff to dark stuff then too meaningful stuff. Anyways I'm getting side tracked haha.
But yeah I got an update for colour profiles this month. Saturated does help but I still have problems.

No issues here.... But may I suggest something a bit heavier....

Not bad lol. I do like heavier stuff as well.

Anyways this damn issue is sh#tting me. Videos are soo unwatchable. I tried watching the new Avengers preview. Transitions between scenes were aweful. And shadows on faces. Hope something will be done for the people who have the issue. There is a lot of talk about it on reddit.

Yeah this is pretty sh#t.....
Had another play with settings. 30% brightness and adaptive display off. Saturated mode.

I run Saturated mode. I watched the video posted and it looks fine to me. I'm on a 2 XL running 8.1 beta 2.

Our 2xl also looked better (no longer have the 2xl though).
Will see how my pixel 2 goes when the next update arrives.
You did take a picture with another phone /camera right not screen shot?
It is a screenshot but it looks the same as it does in person.

I'm seeing the exact same blotchy and patchy effect when I watch that video on my Pixel 2 with:

  • 8.1.0 (yeah, the update doesn't fix this)
  • 35% brightness
  • adaptive off
  • natural and saturated color levels

I'm the farthest thing from an expert when it comes to color/graphic/video processing but I have a couple of guesses.

  • based on how similar this looks like video delivered in a lossy compressed format, maybe there is some sort of server-side inline compression happening before the video gets sent to the Pixel 2. I turned on the "stats for nerds" option but didn't get a chance to inspect the figures closely or compare to my backup Moto E4 Plus which doesn't have this effect. Weird, huh? Looks great on my $110 phone but not-so-great on my $700 phone.
  • the Pixel 2 video driver is doing some sort of color quantization resulting in the banding and blotching seen under certain circumstances.

Again, just my completely uneducated and uninformed guesses. Fortunately for me, I rarely use my phone for video so this does not bother me too much. If I were a big mobile video user, I could see how this would suck big time.

True. Yeah good points. I get it on most videos. It's not a deal breaker but after never having this issue on other phones it's kind of a bummer.

So a quick (dirty?) workaround from Reddit is to use the Screen Balance app.

Using the Display Tester app to fine tune my settings, I ended up with the following on my Pixel 2 (Natural color setting):

You can go higher with "Strength", but I find that black becomes way less "inky black" past that. At 35% Strength, square 1 is barely visible and 0 is invisible at 100% brightness in the Display Tester app's Black Saturation test. If you can see block 0, then I think you have yours set too high.

After that is all set, I used the following videos (played in HDR) to test my settings:

I invite you all to A/B these videos with the Screen Balance app turned on and off. It's a massive difference and a huge improvement with the app on IMO.

One the chess video you can actually see some of the backgrounds and details of the character's clothes. On the sheep video, the grass appears to be properly shadowed, rather than just displayed as black.

Feedback thus far from what I read is that the app consumes a negligible amount of battery, so I am keeping this on. :)
