Black one doesn't stand up well to everyday use.

This is how my friends Black htc one looks after throwing it in and out of her purse (with keys and other obvious hazards in a separate area) after 5 days.

It's just like iPhone 5's scuffgate

Not really surprising. Basically the same process Apple uses. Hopefully HTC made the finish a bit thicker than Apple so that the One is at least a little more durable.

First question: why was she throwing it in the purse if she knew keys were in there that would scratch it?

Second question: If she knew that it would be thrown in said purse, with said keys, why wouldn't she buy a case?

Third question: see the first two questions.

Whats interesting is that he said his friend had the keys and other hazardous objects in a separte area of the purse. I have a black iPhone5 in a case and carried it caseless for the 1st week(luckily didn't get one that was scuffed out of the box which was the biggest deal about scuffgate), and I never scratched it at all. However, I got paranoid and put a Diztronic TPU case on it. The thing about the iPhone is, the whole front is gorilla glass, so there won't be any metal to scuff if it's in a case. The One, even in a case has aluminum exposed from both speaker grill covers, headphone jack on the chamferred edge, IR blaster power button cutout might expose the chamfer depending on the size, and microUSB cutout the same. I love the black One and would have ordered it had it been available at pre-order here in the states, but looking at the exposure to possible noticible scuffs makes me feel a bit better for getting the Silver. I'm pretty sure I would still order the Black if I could though. What worries me about the silver is the white polycarbonate filling on the sides turning yellow over time.

I hope you didn't take those pictures with a One! I can barely even tell what I'm looking at and I have my glasses on! But yeah, exactly why I'd stick to plain old aluminum with no finishes.

I may be mistaken, but these look like 100% crops from a larger photo vs. a macro photo of just the damaged area. Or they were taken with a terrible camera.

I'm definitely not surprised. If HTC used the same process as apple for the black coloring this not shocked at all. The silver is more the natural color if the metal so nothing to peel only possibly scratch whereas the black can peel or scratch.

Its right up there with the iPhone 5 in black, it doesn't hold up. At least the alternative HTC One is Silver and NOT white. The Silver one does look nice though.

Looks like she has dropped it. 2nd picture looks to rough and jagged to have happened inside a purse.

What do you expect to happen when you don't have a case???

I am probably paranoid more than others when it comes to my phones. I slap a defender case on as soon as possible to protect my investment. My iphone 5 looks as perfect as the day I bought it, as will my HTC One.

Yeah best thing to do is get a cover for it if you don't want the device to take a beaten. It doesn't matter what kind of device it is if it is not protected at some point it's going to get nicks and scratches so forth. Some will get them sooner due to some people are just more abusive with their devices than others that's just the way it is. So those who choose not to have some kind of cover or something protecting your device that's the chance you will take not matter what kind of device it is.

That's why I don't buy a purse that doesn't have a dedicated cell phone pocket on the inside. If you just throw it into the mix its going to look like cr@p after a while no matter what phone you have.

It was bound to happen. They use pretty much the same anodization process Apple does, and we all know how easily the iPhone 5 scuffs up. Not only is the silver One the better looking version, it will also hold up MUCH better in daily life.

But how valuable is perfection if no one sees it?

Which carrier released the Black One five days ago?

Fake speaker holes? I believe that's a dummy unit, so not the same quality as a real phone.
