Samsung and 1+ devices work just as wellMessages app as well, although I'm not sure how compatible Google Messages is with all phones. I know you can use it on Samsung phones, but what about other manufacturers?

EDIT: Oops, I was initially thinking the OP was asking about spam calls and emails. Just re-read it and saw they asked about calls and texts. So yes, you'd need to try Google Messages (or just get a Pixel, which does a great job filtering out spam calls and texts).
